IHi all,
I am relatively new to caravaning. But I did manage to get a lovely Luna Clubman 400-2. It an older model. Early 1990s. I still has all the original features and upholstery. Very quaint. I do like it but I was considering updating the interior. The upholstery is rather bleached by the sun over the years.
I guess my question is. Sinse there is nothing wrong with anything other than some discoloration (obviously there is signs of use ext. It's not perfect but in amazing condition for it's age). Would it be "disrespectful" to modernise it.... just because....
We had a 1992 Sprite as our first caravan to see if we liked it. The only thing we changed were the curtains as they were pretty bad and pretty useless. The upholstery was in good condition so we left it and didn't regret it.
IMO re-covered furniture just looks like recovered furniture. Stay original.
We did add some cushions for a little more colour.
Try and keep it as original as possible as it will be worth a lot more at some point in the future. I love seeing old caravans come onto site especially if I am allowed a lot around inside.
I would say that if you're intending to keep and use the caravan, do whatever you want to make it how you would like it to be, comfort-wise and visually.
Otherwise loose covers or new removable covers maybe, so you can still revert to the original if need be.
There is interest (and potential value if old enough!) in vintage caravans, and originality generally gets the best prices. Just plain 'old' caravans in good working order do have a value too, but that can be diminished rather than enhanced by customising them. Originality (if usable) shows a van in it's honest state, makeovers get people wondering if it's a recycled 'chicken shed' with a dire state past and hidden leaks/flaws etc. just tarted up for sale! .... and always a question mark over how well done and quality of materials used in the makeover.
If you want to do it for yourself, with no concern for sale or value, that's a different matter.
As to jaded upholstery, 'throws' are the answer to brighten them up without permanent change, re-upholstery is also quite expensive if paying a professional to do it! Many of us with modern vans, especially if we have dogs or kids, 'protect/preserve' our upholstery with throws, so quite a common practice to use throws.
We have a dog, she gets muddy, so we always have a “bothy blanket” on both bench seats. Easier to clean if you spill something onto the upholstery (several glasses of red wine, over the years). Handy as an extra layer on cold nights too.
Wow. Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Ok. I think i got my answer!
I love the idea of the temporary covers. I like the vintage vibe, it ws only the bleaching that was pushing the question. so will keep it as. Thanks a lot.
On a quick side note. Solar panels. I had a thought last night to add some. But going on the replies here I think stand alone panels will be the way to go also. That way I could try making a diy sun tracket to get the most of of them too.
