Looks like a bridge too far for our little 1982 GX Slimtrekker. Damp and rot now found in the roof and rear wall, as well as the complete front wall from the top of the window down to the floor. Have removed the front of the van and drawn up plans for the new woodworking needed, but run out of time.
Anyone who wants this little van as a project is welcome to it, it's well equipped. see it here
Otherwise... anyone know how I scrap this? The local tip won't take it. The local car scrappy won't take it. Do I need to take it to bits first and take it to the tip one piece at a time?

Doh... now the daughter's in tears and wants to help make the van better instead of scrapping it. She's 11 and actually quite at home with fixing things. She's helped quite a bit so far. What is a Dad to do?
Anyway... so far I can't find a caravan breakers close enough as I don't trust the A frame at the front for more than a few miles at the moment. (You can put your hand through the top of the chassis). Now the wife's saying I should take a day off work and finish the repairs as a 'father and daughter' project.
So many deserving projects, so little time...
So... moral dilema, should I fix it, or scrap it and go sailing?

agree with father daughter project but if you scrap it you should get a good price for the aluminium, as said the chassis will make a good trailer trimmed down

windows could be sold as well, many folks looking for replacements all over the internet. Strip it, turn it into a trailer, sell the caravan type parts here, and buy another caravan with the proceeds, just a cheap one that is not needing as much work! plenty out there!
If you don't want the hassle of breaking it yourself, you could try putting it up on Ebay for next to nowt - I'm sure someone will want it either for spares or as a project
As has been said, they do make great trialers. A friend has one for a motorcycle trailer - comes in very handy every so often!!!
Really depends if you have the time space to break it yourself.

Good news... Just looking through the old posts and came across this one. In the end, me and my daughter completely repaired this van and it's now being used regularly as a beach hut by my brother down in Ferring near Worthing. Just thought it might be nice to round this one off. Thanks for all the comments and the advice in other parts of this site.

Oh that's lovely news! I've very fond memories of 'working' with my dad as a girl - I still turn to him now for advice and wouldn't wanted to have tackled my own caravan damp problems earlier this year without him.
A Beach Hut sounds like a wondeful retirement home for your caravan.

While I made several trips to the local council tip earlier this year, with trailer loads of hedge clippings & tree prunings. There were two chaps who'd towed an old van into the tip, they 'dismantled' it in about three hours. Turning it into piles of timber, plywood, plastic, aluminium (and a few other bits) and a huge pile of polystyrene... From what I could see, the tools they used were minimal. A couple of big club hammers, a saw and a pry bar!...
I don't think the staff at the tip were particularly happy with the mess they made (lumps of polystyrene blowing everywhere!). However, the caravan was gone in less than a morning and a lot of it (aluminium, metalwork & wood) went into recycling skips. So it was better than what often happens to a lot of old vans ie: just dragged out and left to rot by the roadside somewhere...
