Hi Nick

How old is your caravan? If it's older than 1999 then the wiring is diferent.
Assuming it is post 1999 the red cable is for the Fridge and must be ignition controlled through a relay. The Yellow cable is for the reversing lights and the green cable is for permanent power,it will also charge your battery when the engine is running. It does this by means of a habitation relay in the caravan which switches the power from the 12v circuits to the batterywhen you start the engine. I have wired the green cable directly onto the battery on my Grand Vitara and put in a 20A inline fuse it all works for me. Remember to connect the white & black wires seperately onto a suitable earth on the body of the vehicle.
Hope this helps

If you wire to the old standard PLUS the black earth to the centre pin for the fridge it will work on pre and post 1998 caravans.

Bailey adopted the habitation relay system in 1996

Nick

You have to fit a split charge relay to the car and wire the red (fridge) wire to it and the blue(battery charge)wire also. This way when you start the engine the fridge will work and the battery will charge. You still attach the green and yellow wires the same.

We have a 1600 16v 3 door and a Challenger 530 SE with the alko 3004 hitch stabliser and it tows fine. The only regret I have is not getting the 5 door for more room otherwise I think they're great cars.

Congrats on the Grand Vitara.

I have recently got my third - secondhand- a 5dr 2.0 diesal automatic, but have not yet towed with one. First tow will be in June.

Cant help with electrics as Ive just paid a small fortune to have bar and electrics fitted, however, I would like to hear from Vitara owners how well they tow ( and what weight they usually tug)

If you read the Towitall link it suggests doubling up the spare wires to reduce the load on the fridge circuit and the fridge earth (centre pin) which give trouble from overload and melting.

Its worked for me !!

A sensing device is hard to find and it really neans that you can use it for a warning light/switch for such things as a reverse catch which is now a thing of the past.

Most new caravans no longer have a 7 core cable since the advent of the habitation relay so there's no sense in trying to connect a sensing relay as there is no cable to connect to !!!
