I'm moving towards buying a 4.0L Cherokee, '98 or '99 ish
This would be the wifes car as she only does 2k miles a year and we'd use it for towing our caravan.
Before I buy, I'm checking the weights.....
I think the gross weight of a Cherokee is 2170kg (is this about right?)
My BMW 525 TDS Touring is 1680Kg
the MIRO is 1130kg
max payload 245KG giving a MTPLM of the van of 1375kg
As the Jeep is a) heavier and b) more powerful and c) 4x4
I'd guess potenially the Jeep'd be a better towcar
Any flaws in my calcs?
------------- If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.
Cannot fault the Jeep for towing, that is what I use and to be honest, even up the largest of hills, it doesn't really notice that the caravan is on the back.
Hard to say Caz. They're much smaller than you'd think, no bigger than a standard car, with a better view with being slightly taller. Very flat front and rear so easy to tell where the end is (once you've got used to it)

Us female 4 x 4 drivers can come in for a lot of stick. Not a problem round here 'cos all the farmers' wives have them but in a city it may be different.

If you can't see the light at the end of the tunnel, just keep going till you go round the bend.
You might have checked the weights, but have you checked the fuel consumption of the Jeep??
Solo, your looking at around 14mpg. Yes, thats a 1 followed by a 4.
On the other hand, the BMW is in a different league. As it's a diesel it could well have more torque than the Jeep too, which is an important consideration when towing. Weight wise, I don't see any problem towing with the BMW.
Certainly if it was me, with the BMW and that size of van, I wouldn't even think about a petrol Jeep. Earn some brownie points and buy your good lady a nice wee runabout!!
And by the way, as we're currently on our 5th Jeep, I don't have anything against Jeeps as such.
I'm just about to buy a 99 Cherokee 4.0L off my brother.
He says he gets around 20-22 to gallon, and doesn't make any difference with his van on the back.
I am also thinking of getting a gas conversion fitted, around £1200-£1500.
As I usually do about 10,000 miles a year, I will get my money back in 18 months max.
I'm sorry, if he gets over 20, then he must be doing a fair bit of tip toeing about the place. It's a well documented fact that they do around 14 mpg.
And as for there being no difference when towing, he obviously has a secret which a lot of people would love to know!!!!
I would strongly suggest you ask him how he calculates his comsumption.
