  Can't argue with that.

I suppose they could have a card with registration number on it and get a discount.

It just annoys me that everybody assumes that ALL 4x4s are gas guzzlers.

Good point Les, even the chavs with no tax or insurance would have to buy fuel.

I guess though that the argument would be that it would hit the road haulage business very hard as their road tax to fuel cost ratio will be a lot lower than ours.

As with many things in life, if there was an easy solution it would have been sorted by now...but it's good that we keep having a go!

Also people who visit this country will be contributing to the upkeep of the roads.  When we take our cars to France or Spain, we contribute in the form of road tolls.

Actually we contribute quite a bit to the construction of the Spanish road network even if we don't go there but thats a completely different discussion.

The recent Road Tax changes is just another example where this governement has allowed a 'smokescreen' to hide its real intent. The press has an ongoing  'hate' affair with 4x4s and this has allowed the government to increase all tax bands, most of which will not be obvious until you re-tax you vehicle next time!

The rating system for fuel consumption only applies to post-2001 vehicles, these vehicles have their accredited fuel consumption listed at initial registration. All pre-2001 vehicles use the previous categories so smug-me with my import- 4x4 will get to pay a whole £5 a year more.

See quote below from somebody who has assessed the changes.

"The cleverly hidden part is the largest group by far, the normal 1.6-2.2L family car / repmobile. They will face an increase of £25.00 cunningly hidden by putting the spot light on us 4x4 drivers!"

Watch out for that renewal form!

I've just had a thought if the hauliers didn't have to pay the £1500 road tax or what ever it is that would be a bonus.

It's not only the haulage industry that would be affected badly, the driver training industry would be hard hit if fuel was taxed more heavily.

My Honda Jazz does well over 30K per year; I pay £100 road tax per year but I would have to double my prices at the very least if the system were changed as suggested.

The Chavs may well have to pay their road tax if it was on the petrol but most would probably not bother taking lessons and passing their test so we would have more unlicensed drivers on the roads.

Good point Caz....the current system, although imperfect is probably as good as it can be.

I have been on about the bio fuel for awhile but the government still taxes you as if you are using normal diesel which proves that the government has no interest in the environment but prefers to rob you through fuel taxes.
