Hi all, I was recently unlucky to find damp in my caravan, but then lucky to find this site. After reading the article by Alan Parker on how he and his lovely wife Annette repaired their caravan. I wanted to try to repair mine but didn't have a clue how to go about this. I noticed that Alan only lived a couple of miles away from me, so I decided to contact him to see if he could give me any advice or help. Alan said he would come to see my van with his trusty damp meter. Well, after giving me some good advice he EVEN offered to let me take my van to his house were he would help me repair it. Alan if you ever read this you are a real star and a gentleman in my eyes. I would like to thank you and Annette for all the kindness (and cup of tea) you showed me and Paula. If there is anything I can do for you mate just let me know. So to anyone else who comes to this site looking for help I'm sure you'll find someone like Alan who is prepared to give up their time to help others.
well done Alan, never even met you but you must be really proud of yourself and what lovely comments for your wife!!!!
I have learnt everything I know from coming here, and if it wasnt for all you guys I wouldnt know half as much as I do now!!!

Do whats right and right will become of you ;-) Nichola xx
Alan - or 'Als' as he likes to be called is a top man. I am in the middle of my repair at the moment and would not have started it if it hadn't been for such blokes like him.
It is extremely comforting to know there are people still around that will help others without reward or gain - top marks in my book Als. Paul you are indeed fortunate to be just round the corner from him.
What would be great possibly if there was a 'meet' one weekend of all people who are members of 'I fixed it myself' club, so that we can all have a look at each others repairs and even give advice and help to others if they came along with their damp vans who are sceptical about doing it themselves. A point to ponder maybe...
Well said Paul Als is indeed a good man, having met him before I can tell you he would always help a fellow camper out, Hey Als when ya coming over to fix me van lol.
I would just like to add my tuppence worth to this thread as well.
Als is a true gent who will help anyone when he can, and if he can't he will help to point you in the right direction. Having spent a few holidays with Annette, Als and Michelle I can honestly say that Als is a true friend, he is a long way from ours but when he learnt of my illness last year he was ready to come up here to help us out in any way he could.
Through the loooong time I have been posting on these forums I have often been pleasantly surprised by the way that folks on tis site are forever going out of there way to help each other, from the small bits of advice to the amazing things, like when Velveteens camper was wrecked and someone gave her there one that was for sale, not only did they do this at no cost to Velveteen but several other members got together and ferried the camper from the North of England to the South, which was truly amazing.
Alan and many others on this site have time and time again restored my faith in humans and just how things ought to be.
Glad to see Alan getting the recognition as he is indeed worthy of such high praise!
well I am now blushing and no i am not going to post a photo of it
Paul

I have often thought about and in deed mentioned to Paul that I would love to have a meet where the fixed it club could meet up somewhere central and we actually fixed a caravan on site just for the hell of it. maybe an idea for the 2007 national rally ( the fixed it corner) .
and to the rest of you I would like to say a big thank you for you kind words. I love this site and have often stated that it is the greatest website on the internet for camping of all types. the advice is second too non and the folk as the friendliest bunch i have ever known, like papa it has restored my faith in human nature.
Here, here. If it wasn`t for guys the likes of Alan (and Wizard) then I would never have even contemplated trying to repair my caravan. Have Just finished today and am in the process of editing my website to join The Caravan Fixers Club.
As someone who has just bought a van, (but found that the front locker lid was broken and therefore inside the locker is damp) I find messages like this, and all the advice available are very encouraging. My hubby and I are not good at DIY, but we are currently sourcing a replacement lid, and then will have a go at replacing the wood in locker - fingers crossed that it hasn't spread any further.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
