We are in the middle of repairing a major damp problem can anyone tell me where i can purchase the sheets of 3/4" 20 mm polystyrene from we live in Stoke-on-Trent. I have had to completely strip out the wooden frame etc and replace

1. How do we fix the polystyrene to the aluminium - is PVA suitable?

2. what glue is used to stick the wallboars to the polystyrene/wood frame?

3. I have go to remove the awning rail and window rails is it better to use the rolls of mastic of a flexible glue/matsic in tubes?

4. The original window frames and some of the wooden frame was made out of 3/4 ply can these be replaced with ordinary timber and treated with ronseal sealer?

5. Can you use products from DIY stores or do they have to be purchased from the specialist caravan suppliers?

Any help appreciated - my first attempt - had to strip equivalent ot to 9 wallboards out all the way back to the aluminium body.

Hi

Can't help on the polystyrene as my hubby got it from his work but for our van it was a standard flooring size (hubby says you can get it from Jewsons).

We used evostick 528 to stick the wallboards to the polystyrene.

We used the tubes of mastic - but that was a personnal choice both are just as good.

We used ordinary timber to rebuild our window frames and just cut it and shaped it to size.

If you can get it from a DIY shop then do so - we got our timber, glue, screws etc from DIY shops but the wallboard and mastic we got from a caravan suppliers.

Hope this helps.  It was our first reapir job which we did over the winter and our carvan is dry as a bone now and being used every weekend.  It's all worth it in the end.

im currently in the process of rescueing a van from damp and have bought nothing from the "specialists" other than tubes of non setting mastic and a 240V inlet

i have used timber and screws from B&Q
3mm plywood and polystyrene sheets from Selco builders merchants
screws from Focus
nail gun from Aldi
wood stain from "the range"

i used tubes of mastic to reseal my rails
no posh mastic on a roll for me
but then again the van im doing is a little past its best and a few dents and dings will probably add to the look rather than detract from it

if i had a posher van to work with then my working practices would change to reflect that
however im working with a 30 year old van and dont really need to be "totally spot on" with what i do
although i do have certain work standards
and i think the finished product will reflect that (hopefully)

check out your local builders merchants and see what they have to offer
i can guarentee that they will have a lot more than B&Q or Focus do
you may even have to open a cash account
but thats no major problem

Hi Will have a look at my webpage and the links on it to fixed it club members web pages , it should give you most of the answers .  http://hp-h.com/p/wizard41/

>>1. How do we fix the polystyrene to the aluminium - is PVA suitable?
>>2. what glue is used to stick the wallboars to the polystyrene/wood frame?

I'm not sure if PVA would be suitable to stick to the aluminium , but i did use it for the wall boards to polystyrene , have a look here for info on glues http://theglue.co.uk/html/caravan_repair.html

>>3. I have go to remove the awning rail and window rails is it better to use the rolls of mastic of a flexible glue/matsic in tubes?

I've used mainly roll mastic with good results , just make sure the surfaces are squeaky clean first . You should be able to use either really , if you use tube mastic make sure you use one suitable for caravans ( not silicone sealant ) .

>>4. The original window frames and some of the wooden frame was made out of 3/4 ply can these be replaced with ordinary timber and treated with ronseal sealer?

You should be ok with normal wood , though in corner area's i'd consider using plywood for strength .

>>5. Can you use products from DIY stores or do they have to be purchased from the specialist caravan suppliers?

Yep diy stores for most stuff , the only thing i bought from a caravan dealer was the roll mastic .

Will, if you or anyone want a copy of a PDF file I have put together of my recent damp repair, please email me on martin at emmo.co.uk and I will gladly send it to you. It is 7mb so I suggest you will need broadband to download it, dialup will take an age. I am working however to get it smaller - watch this space!

Wizard - did you get a copy OK?
