chanmfering the leading (front) edge of the shoes with a sharp knife helps as well.
Also, cut criss cross lines in the braking material with a stanley knife or similar.
However, you mention "some material left"... how much is some? If eighth of an inch get them changed.
Then chamfer and criss cross the new ones.
