Never caravanned before. Just bought new Bailey Ranger 500/5 to replace tent. Planning to insure with E & L as my caravanning friends already are and I have been quoted a good price, but whilst trawling through this site for the first time, I think there is maybe some negative about them. Can anyone let me know if they are ok and also who else is worth a look?
NNNNNNNNooooooooooooooooo. anyone but E& hEll, do a search, myself and many others have changed companies due to the snide and underhand ways they operate. I use the caravan club now, more expensive but I would rather scoop my eyeballs out with a spoon then go with E&hEll

ME TOO .nfu are very good on price.we are with the caravan club now.we have the 500/5 and with the CC you can get new for old for the next 10 years,a bit dear yes but get what you pay for on insurance as i know from past experence.more here
Just to clarify, there are several issues with E&L some of which are:
1. Many reports of not paying out (I know that no insurance likes paying out, but E&L have a bad rep in this area).
2. What you see is most definitely not what you pay (lots of extra little charges which add up to make their insurance in many cases more expensive than others).
3. Monthly payments are based on and indeed are due each Lunar month (not calendar month, so actually 13 payments per year).
4. Once signed up you will receive what appears to be junk mail from them, on closer inspection you will find that it is opt out clubs/schemes (if you don't take action within set time then payments increase to cover the cost of a useless club membership scam).
5. The security requirements for all valuable vans (anything worth more than £5000) are so extreme that you will need a second mortgage to afford them and it will take three days to de-activate all the sensors / unlock all the clamps etc.
6. You can ask customer services anything on the phone and they will always give you the answer you want, but they will never confirm it in writing (easy get out clauses in the case of a claim.
Ok so I exagerated a little on point 5, but the rest is valid.
I started off with them until I realised what a shoddy outfit they were, so this is from my own personal experience and is purely my own point of view.
I hope you read this quick as E&L have a habit of threatening forums that speak ill of them (got very nasty on Practical Caravan).
Good luck in your choice,
Mike
(P.S. I am now with Caravana Club and with an introductory discount they were cheaper than E&L)
Thank you all for your solid help and advice, I will be having a further shop around before committing to any company.
I found this site by error whilst looking for something on Google but what a little gem it seems to be, as after a good hours reading of a number of different postings I have learnt so much as a first time caravanner and have added to my favourites as a future regular read.
In connection with Mike's very kind detailed response I wanted to check my security arrangements as my van when collected this weekend will have a hitchlock, wheel clamp and a factory fitted PIR/Tilt sensor alarm, is this adequate arrangement?
We had always been with the Caravan Club insurance until we got a new van last year and realized just how much over the top we'd been paying all those years and that was for the basic 5C cover!
So, did some research on here, (natch), and eventually switched to Caravan Guard which seems to have good feedback and saved us about a £100 a year, which wasn't to be sniffed at.
Admittedly Caravan Guard still wasn't the cheapest, but it seemed more reliable than some others, (E&L especially...dreadful reports as seen above on Mike's post), and did cover us for everything we may need, (fingers crossed we never do)
And OMG!!!!! Andy!!! I've just noticed you're a newby
to the best site on the w-h-o-l-e world wide web. And to your new addiction which is
I won't frighten with all the stuff about how this addiction can ruin normal life, coz once you've wandered in here.....there is no other life
But just take a squiz on the 'New Arrivals....Welcome' thread and you won't go far wrong, loadsa tips for ya on there.
So, until we meet at the next ukcs-anon meeting, (next one coming soon to a pc near you), I'll just sign out in the manner with which we start our meetings, so you'll know what to expect:
My name's hippy chick and I am a ukcs addict...yipeeeeee
And if you see anything like this anywhere
Don't worry....it'll just be another one of us, no doubt
Your security arrangements sound OK, be sure you get really good quality Hitch lock and clamp. CC will give a discount for an alarm, you need to be a member, but it's worth it, their sites are very good.
We moved our insurance to them several years back as they were cheaper than what we had before.
Be sure to fix up the insurance BEFORE you get the van and do use all your security devices. Don't leave the van, even for a moment, unattended without securing it. Not even to nip into the toilet at a petrol station!
Thank you everyone for your suggestions, I have recived a few alternative quotes and Caravan Guard looks favourite for my business based upon your suggestions and I found them very helpfull. Hippy Chick what a fantastic welcome.
I am really impressed with this sitee and will read it on a regular basis.

Hi Andy, nnnnnooooooooooooooo from me toodon't touch E&L we were with them for 8 months until we saw a post on here about them (thank heavens for u.k.c.s.) got in touch with them told them that the added security that they required in the small print was not pointed out to us on taking out the insurance and hey presto, they gave us back all that we had paid to date. Quite worrying though to think that all that time we weren't insured.
Welcome to the site, it's so addictive, it's like a drop in centre, you have to keep popping in to see whats new. (better to be a drop in than a drop out) lol.

Our insurers insisted we had a Tracker fitted on our new van - as well as wheelclamps, hitchlocks, secure fencing, perimeter lighting, armed guards at each corner of the storage area with instructions of shoot to kill. However, Swift Group Customer Services in Hull insisted that the security they fitted at the factory (alarm and microchip) was adequate enough in their eyes to prevent the van being stolen... and anything else was " a matter of taste".
