Getting back to the thread. I am now looking at a book which I purchased from HM Stationery Office about 5 years ago. It is called The Essential Towing Handbook, and its origination is credited to the Police Foundation. In this book there is a page with the heading Traffic Law, and begins with "There are specific regulations applying to trailers and vehicles towing trailers".
Among the list of do's and don'ts, there are two points which read:
A trailer must not be left on a road at night without lights.
A trailer must not be left on a road so as to cause an obstruction.
Live and let live is the best formula provided each is considerate to the other, but if a dispute arises it seems obvious that ignoring these two factors could land you in trouble.
