We are hopefully upgrading our caravan in the next couple of months, (Hopefully a brand new Bailey Ranger 550-6!)
Problem is we need a bigger car. I am quite smitten with either of the above two but I would really like any commenst on how good a tow car they are, reliability issues and also what I need to watch out for on either car.
I know this site is a mine of information, so come on do me proud!............
hi i had the omega estate before and its a very good towcar.our was the 2ltr auto gls.i would go for the 2.5 V6.got 25 on a run and 20 towing, unless there was a strong headwind on the M6coming back.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
we tow our bailey with a freelander TD4 2.0 (BMW engine)...superb tow and excellent all round car (no probs with it)...you wouldnt even know we had the van on the back, also very good mpg.
Don't get a freelander below 2.5. They are crap...
There was a thread on here not so long ago with quite a few replies. I'm sure someone will be along to put the link up for you to read through....Interesting read..?
having driven an Omega as a long term company car, wouldn't touch one with a barge pole.
On the other hand, we own a Freelander TD4, towing a Bailey Ranger 500-5, and it's great!! Wouldn't know the van's there. Comfortable on a long run, can load it up to the brim with no worries at all, and is pretty good to drive on its own.

What if the Hokey Cokey really is what it's all about....?
I spent quite a long time looking for a diesel Omega as a tow-car and couldn't find one that didn't have silly miles. They tend to be well used workhorses.
I was given lots of advice including:-
1. Don't buy a higher spec one as they have a lot of electrical gremlins.
2. On diesels (particularly older 2.5 BMW engine) servicing is crucial, so don't buy unless it has lots of history.
3. Manuals are better than automatics for towing.
If you can get the right one I understand they make very good towcars. It is likely you would pick up an Omega much more cheaply than a Freelander.
Ive had two Omegas in my time. As long as you dont buy new (which you cant cos they stopped building em three years ago!!!) they are affordable luxury cars, German made and drive like a Merc.
I had no problems at all with them. Just a bulb go now and again, as they do.
CDX spec is excellent. Id avoid leather in the elite model (too sticky in hot weather)
Its a spacious car, with plenty of boot space for all the crap we take with us when caravanning. Diesels are a bit rough and not particularly ecomnomical, but the V6 petrol engines are smoooooooth, and after all you arent towing your caravan every day.
Heres the prices for a 2003 CDX 4 door saloon, 2.6 V6 with 20,000 miles on the clock - barely run in for this sort of engine.
Dealer £5,195
Private £4,695
Part exchange £4,495
Trade £4,245
Cost new £22,450
FIve grand for a car of this quality - I wouldnt hesitate. Vauxhalls own web site will have Network Q cars - these are the pick of the bunch, and at these sort of prices very affordable, even from the main dealer.
Landy is fine if you arent bothered about the drive quality, space and the uk reliability risks. Omega will turn more heads.......
