I love caravanning and wish I'd taken it up years ago.  I'm in my 3rd year now and my best tip is not to be tempted to buy every 'caravan' gadget going.  You will never use half of them.  I would suggest an few shorter trips and then make a list of what you really need.

Also, don't buy overpriced electrical equipment from caravan shops - just buy low wattage equivalent from Comet or Currys.

enjoy the good things:- no more having to put up canvas in the rian, if it is raining, put the steadies down, plug in the lectric, and open the wine and in 15 minutes you can relax!!

the benefit of having the clothes, food bedding already in is ace, no more 2 hour arrival times to get sorted.

check your tyres, load carefully, if in doubt, put it in the car, remember not to overload the electrical circuits, but most of all, the van will allow you to extend your season of camping, so use it as much as you can!!

We are also newbies from North Essex. we had our first real trip out last weekend (up to CC site at Nene Valley, my eyes shut at every roundabout and lorry overtaking so I wouldn't stress out hubbie !!). Like you we found our neighbours on the site really helpful , especially with reversing onto pitch hints. Can't wait to go again.
