we have done extensive repairs to our caravan and after completing these have now found 2 cracks in our front window. After all of the recent rainfall water has now been trapped between the double glazed unit via the crack.
we know how to drain the water by loosening the nuts and bolts on the catches used to open and close the window, but how do we seal the cracks on the outside to stop further water damage.
The water has leaked into the caravan on the window sill via the catches, that area can be dried out without to much fuss.
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated, we cant afford to repalace the window it would cost between £300/£400 for that so its not an option I'm afraid.
fish tank sealer is only a siliucone, a better option would be resin, but it doesnt set clear so you would always be able to see it, but rub it down with some fine emery and apply the resin, works a treat
Go to your local model makers shop and buy a 1mm drill and some clear solvent which model plain makers use for making cockpits .
Drill holes through the outer skin of plastic at the ends of the cracks, [this stops the crack from spreading ],then using artists fine paint brush paint the clear solvent resin over the surface of the crack ,try to get some on the edges of the crack if you can ,
Then get some headlight repair kit from your local car parts shop ,cut a patch of the clear headlight film to just cove the crack ,round the corners this stops curling . Then stick a badge ,i used a flag of St George over the clear patch .
My crack was 75mm and i used this method it has been OK for 2 years
Is your van insured JTLT and if so, would it cover this sort of damage? I had a brick thrown at my van on site earlier in the year which put an 8" crack in the rear full width window. I got quoted just under £400 off a caravan dealer. I eventually had it repaired through my insurance, although had to pay the excess.
