the front shelf in out 1994 Compass Rallye has cracked up and the grain effect (paint?) has flaked and is falling off, this I think is caused by the sun coming in the front windows
apart from this problem the van is almost immaculate
hi first check it for damp with a meter (£15),the shelf is usually at the rear of a joining seam.if no damp, what i used on ours was clear varnish.the reason for this is that the shelf finish is most certainly to be printed on.any attempt at removal will make it worse.

no damp whatsoever Michael, the painted layer has simply cracked up due to the intense heat of the sun being magnified further by the lens effect of the front windows, it looks like it has "Crazed" and has now lifted from the chipboard shelf leaving a pink coloured primer behind it lol
yes thats what ours did on the other van,as said it depends on how large the patch of pink is.there are lots of coloured varnishes on the market but from experience it takes a lot to cover these patches.the only thing i can think of is to make a new one from those floor laminate boards and stick this on,if you can find one to match.

Spasm as long as you clear all the old paint off, sand it well to provide a good base and follow the manufacturers guidelines there shouldnt be any problems.
Try scraping the surface using a piece of glass in a scrapping fasion to remove the old stuff.
IMHO no,it may work on the finished surface but not the damaged bits.worth a try though nothing lost if it does not.you could still cover with a 5MM ply and grain that.

Had to do this to a telephone table belongong to my mam,,,, very similar, scraped it using the flat edge of a piece of glass to remove the old flaking varnish and paint effect. wire wooled the wood with white spirits to raise the grain, applied a buff undercoat and stained and dragged it to reproduce the grain.
Mind I was a painter and decorator,,,,,,, a couple of coats of floor varnish and bobs your fathers brother
Shielsy, many thanks, could you kindly explain please why you have to raise the grain? I know that you're meant to do it but after all the time getting it nice and flat, smooth and clean, it seems to go against the grain to raise the grain.
I used paint and grain on our (now sold) folding camper. I filled in the small cracks first with wood filler, sanded it down and then painted it with paint and grain, when that had dried i gave it a coat of matt varnish to protect it further. Worked very well and certainly made it look much better than the cracks. I would give it a go, and if that doesn't work you could make one out of very thin ply and paint that instead.

not the same im afraid, the shelf is not wood as such.its what i call conti board thin ply top and bottom and a chip filling.and the grain is printed on to a white or pink background, any sanding will only enlarge the damage as the print is removed.most caravans are made like this, all printed on finish.this includes all the cupboards as well
