Hi I have twins of 20m and would like to know how others have used their caravans with babies without them falling out of beds? We have an end double which we will probably not make up as they will fit on the either side cushions at the moment.
Many many thanks - is the weight of the foam cushion enough to keep the bed guard in place or are the ones that you screw in better?
we have used the wood folding one (pic1) since our grandson was one he is now three ,the weight of a large cushion is enough to hold one but not the back rest cushion.and welcome too

I used to have one of those blue folding rails when my kids were small. The weight of the mattress was plenty heavy enough to hold it in place and they are really easy to use (and mobile), but the joints are a bit proud so its best used on a bed where the mattress and base are the same size. (as in the above pictures).
If the mattress is sunk into the base it doesn't lie tidy because you have to push it in a bit to allow for the base sides, and therefore the mattress bends upwards. Am I making ANY sense?
Thinking about caravan seats though, as long as the seats don't overlap the base you should be okay. Personally for 20months I wouldn't bother, they get to know their bearings eventually, plus if they're in a sleeping bag they don't move so much. And its not far to fall - put a spare sleeping bag or blanket on the floor - my kids didn't fall out much but they'd either get up and back in bed, or they'd stay on the floor if they weren't cold! Or I'd put them back in if I was concerned (I'm not THAT bad a mother!)
We put our daughter in the made up double size (we have fixed at the other end) - she moves around and only fell off the edge once when she was taling to us and wouldnt go to sleep - she just cracked up laughing and got back in - like Karen - we just pop a pillow underneath the end.. she sometimes (if she wants it) has a clip on sleeping bag with straps so she doesnt move around much - wouldnt waste money on guards. It doesnt stop em getting out once they hit around 18m!!
At 20m they tend to sense the edge in my experience.. in our layout, the washroom wall covers a lot of the side of the bed, so we put her head that side so it encloses her, she moved to the middle during the night - they are like pigeons - they know the way to point no matter what you do!
Just make up the double - there should plenty of room for them both if its anything like ours!! Get em a couple of cool sleeping bags (they do a good one with a pillow at the end that folds away in toysRexpensive) and you are good to go! MY daughter sleeps so much better in the van than at home, must be all the fresh air and running about. She even slept throgh a 30mph wind the other night whilst I stayed up waiting for things to fall off. Nejoy your camping - there is nothing better for kids in my opinion. Fresh air, countryside and no playstation!
We had a big travel cot we used until she started climbing out - now she is in a big mummy and daddy bed so she is proud and wouldnt be seen in a cot no more. The cot fitted nicely in between the seats. For twins it would be no good. We have another on the way in 7 and a bit months - so we'll start again!

been watching with interest, or 2y/o sleeps on the front double in our van at the mo, but we are due another arrival in november, so he will have to go on one side, with the baby at the other, does anyone know if those pop up travel cot/pod things are any good??
When my daughter was a tiny baby I used to take the carrycot for her to sleep in, it doubled up as the pram too. Once she'd outgrown that I tried a Tomy bed guard but she tried to climb over it so she slept with me in the double bed (me next to the edge). She's 22 months now & I've just bought a "My First Ready Bed" which is an inflatable matress with a cover and bedding all in one. It's matress part has got slightly raised edges so I'm hoping that coupled with the attached covers will keep her in it. I've not tried it in the caravan or camper yet, but think she'll still need her slumbersac inside as the bedding is very thin.
We have the same arrival in November too!!! we have just put the travel pop up cot away - really great and useful. We used to use it at home as a playpen, then pack it away for caravanning. On a nice day you can put baby in the awning with you in the travel cot so (s)he can play away and not wander off.. if you have the room in your van then they are a great idea. We used it all the time. Here is a pic last April!
We have a dinette one end and fixed singles at back, so we have some thinking to do when Little P number 2 comes along.
Like Moz we've just got her an all in one sleeping bag and pillow princess thing from toysrus. She didnt always like covers so we also had a clip on sleeping bag which went over her shoulders, of course she will just take it off now and throw it at us.
