Swift Group, the prominent UK-based manufacturer of caravans, motorhomes, and holiday homes, has recorded a pre-tax loss of £4.08 million for the financial year ending August 31, 2024, according to accounts filed with Companies House.
Swift blamed the £4.08m pre-tax loss for the year to the end of August 2024 on the end of the post-pandemic surge in sales, economic uncertainty, and customers putting off purchase decisions until after the general election
They don't mention the silly prices that are being charged for caravans or that customers have to constantly take caravans back to the dealer for repairs!
I've seen plenty of comments elsewhere, with very little sympathy for the company, many citing both excessive prices and abysmal quality (with poor/indifferent customer care dealing with the faults!) as the basis for their plight! Reaping the rewards of their years of contemptuous attitude to customers seemed to sum it up!
A number of years since I looked at buying a near new caravan, and I looked at lots for around a year before picking one to buy, but have to say even back then, I found Swift group vans seeming to have a lot of obvious faults with failed interior features like broken doors (mostly catches and hinges) on lockers, and 'wobbly' fitments, which was not the case with other brands. Rather put me off the brand as so many faults on so many vans implied not very robust and poor design!
Now how much of that bad feeling can be laid directly at Swifts door, and how much is down to franchised dealers is difficult to determine! I bought my s/h Lunar from a franchised Swift dealer, and they didn't overly impress me with their 'do as little as possible' attitude and failed promises to do things, but also heard a whole catalogue of shortcomings since then from assorted other people about them, so maybe my impression was fully justified and the dealerships are not up to much!
Could of course be the perfect storm! Combination of declining marketplace and their perceived or otherwise poor quality at inflated prices driving limited customers to rival brands!
We've lost too many manufacturers in past years, competition and choice is a good thing, so lets hope they can address their issues and survive with better products.
