Just returned from a week at Hillfort Tipis, and what an absolute gem of a campsite!
The pitches are huge, and spread far apart. The facilities are fun, quirky, functional and above all eco friendly.
The men’s loos are a stroke of genius, with lovely art to gawp at while you do your business.
The hosts, John and Kate were extremely welcoming, and warm genuine people, who helped us throughout our stay, recharging our power packs and supplying wood.
This site is in an absolutely breathtaking location, with amazing views you find yourself lost in. Daisy, out goofy Labradoodle had a great time, as did the whole family.
I highly recommend this site, and am planning a return visit! 5*****
I've stayed at this site last month for two days with 2 small tents and a car. The site is beautiful. There was plenty of space with nearby local peaks, from where you can view the whole area or watch the sunset. It has also great campfire facilities.
As it is a green campsite the basic facilities are built nature friendly with a surprising high-tech twist to it (see the showerheads). Low shrubs give shelter against the wind, though as it is a coastal area, it can be very windily. For maximising comfort you may consider hiring a yurt.
The owner is not your everyday manager, but he is friendly and well caring and knows a thing or two about cars. Turned out very helpful as our car refused to start one morning. His persuasion to find the problem got the car started, keeping our hollidays rolling.
Best campsite ever! The location is beautiful with large pitches mown out of a meadow. It is remote and a mission to find but that adds to the charm.
The owner John is extremely friendly and constantly on the go to keep everyone happy. The facilities are good, there is no electric hook ups, there is is no electricity at all so it's something of a miracle John achieves all that he does.
There is no play set up for the children but there is large areas of unknown meadow and a large rocky outcrop to climb. We've just got home from 3 nights and are fully recharged and relaxed after taking it slow for a few days.
Fantastic experience, beautiful location and a campsite owner that would do anything to make your stay enjoyable! Locally their are beautiful beaches, quaint little towns and stunning places to eat and drink.
Then in the evening, relax around the campfire with a glass of wine, or chill in the hot tub. This really was an experience like no other, the nature of the site is such that it feels like you are camping in the wild, surrounded by flowering gorse, bluebells and medow grass.
A quick walk to the rocky outcrop above the site gives you mind blowing 360 degree views of the Pembrokeshire countryside and coastline and the Strumblehead lighthouse.
On site there is a cabin with showers in, a fridge freezer, charging point, kettle and sink. There are also portaloos that are cleaned at least once a day. The glamping spots also have a small kitchen shed with all the basics inside and the owner John is happy to help with anything else you need.
On arrival we realised we had forgotten out tent poles, however, John came to the rescue with spare tents that he helped us put up, and fresh eggs for breakfast and a freshly caught sea bass for our dinner!
During our trip we visited Pembroke Castle, Barafundle Bay, Blue Lagoon at Abereidi, we went kyaking at Whitesands, had fresh crab at The Sloop, went on a boat trip to Ramsey Island and wandered round St Davids.

We visited Hillfort-Tipis from Friday 11th July – Sunday 13th July. Well, most of us did. Myself and my daughter decided to head down a day earlier as she was off school and it was wasted camping time! A quick email to the owner at Hillfort the night before, and it was all set for us to drive down the following day and as the rest of our group (including my husband) weren’t arriving until the following day, the owners were incredibly kind in helping me put our rather large tent up (impossible to do myself – and my 4 year old wasn’t much help).
Due to a booking cancellation earlier that day, we were given the ‘penthouse’ pitch at no extra cost. This pitch has a communal fire pit area, utility tent (with a box full of essentials in case you’d forgotten anything!), and THE most outstanding views – in one direction the rolling hills of Pembrokeshire, and in the other Strumble Head lighthouse and the beautiful Irish Sea (which was also the nightly setting of beautiful sunsets!) You also have access to the rocky hills around, and with the owner’s guidance you can find the perfect spot to watch the sunset – my 4 year old found it no trouble, and there’s even a set of chairs up there waiting for you!
Knowing that I was pitching alone for that one night with my daughter, the owner was incredibly attentive and ensured that we had everything we needed by popping up an hour or so after pitching, and again as the sun was heading West to get a fire set up for us if required. As basically a first time single camper, I felt very safe and looked after.
The rest of the group arrived the next day (3 other tents) and all managed to fit into the mowed pitches alongside our ‘penthouse’. There are mowed pitches scattered here and there across the land, giving you the feeling of wild camping, with wild flowers, ferns, and plenty of butterflies as you’d expect in a National Park, but with a manageable lawn for pitching! The mowed pitches are not designed for the monster tent we have (a Kalahari 10 with porch) but it fitted easily in the penthouse pitch, and I noticed at least 2 fields where there wouldn’t be any problems pitching a monster, or indeed if you were a larger group of tents. (Our next largest tent was a Vango Icarus 500 and it would have fitted in most mowed pitches).
I didn’t look in the pre-erected Tipis but I did notice they had wooden huts containing a multitude of cooking equipment and utilities – the owner indicated that he wanted to build the same to replace the utility tent by our pitch – a great idea.
As this site is part of a National Park, the owner does not have planning permission to build anything permanent, so the shower block and toilets are technically mobile. The shower block is an adapted horse box, with hot running water in the shower, a washing up sink, fridge, freezer, plug sockets and plenty of bits and pieces that you may have forgotten to bring with you. The toilets are portaloos, and are brought in depending on the amount of campers on site. There was only one there for our weekend (it was quiet!), and although it was definitely getting full (sorry!) by the end of Sunday, the owner kept it impeccably clean – I’ve never experienced a portaloo with a room scenter before! Considering the restrictions, it was an amazing set up. And I’m not even mentioning the night time lighting or hot tub!
The weather changed on Saturday with a pretty constant sea mist and drizzle, with the wind picking up overnight. It wasn’t too bad but it did make a point that I would NOT want to be on this site if the wind picked up too much! You are very exposed, especially in the Penthouse pitch! But if you go when the weather is good, it’s a beautiful place to be.
There's plenty of walking opportunities on site and int he area (including down to the lighthouse), and Fishguard is only about 5 miles away with a Tesco express and fish and chip restaurant, with plenty of other restaurants nearby too.
There's no park or playground on site, or any child specific facilities, but that was perfect for us. My 4 year old ran around, chased butterflies, explored the hills (with adults!), played with a bucket of water, pretended to be a pirate, toasted marshmallows, watched the sunset. Oh and DID enjoy the table football when it appeared. But what more do you need?
I cannot give enough praise for the owner as he made a point of greeting and chatting to everyone in our group, and would pop up occasionally to make sure we were okay, and if there was anything we needed (including a pair of binoculars and, randomly, a table football set!). This is how a campsite owner should be. It’s the attention to detail, the little touches, and genuinely caring about the campers that makes this site brilliant. Thanks to the owners
In terms of location and pitches, this is as close to 'wild camping' as any site I've been to - plenty of space, amazing location and surrounded by natural gorse and ferns.
In terms of facilities, it's reassuringly not wild - clean loos, good shower and washing up facilities, a freezer to keep your coolblocks solid, and even somewhere to charge your phone.
However, the real star of this sight (pardon the pun) is the night sky. Glorious evening sunsets and minimal light pollution, so great for stargazers. Even better when viewed from the wood-fired hottub.
Did I mention the hot tub? It's fantastic!
Fire pits at each pitch make for cosy evenings, although the nature of the fire containers means that campfire cooking is not as easy as on a totally open fire, so you might be wise to bring a BBQ.
