Please note we have been advised that this site is now closed, and no longer offers camping, motorhome or caravanning pitches. If you know that this situation has changed in the future, please could you let us know. Many thanks
We came here for 4 nights, having read the reviews and to be honest we thought on arrival we had made a mistake. The area where we pitched was next to a part built wooden structure (we later found out that it was being built as a woodworking shed) and a small pond where people were encouraged to empty their grey water which made it a bit smelly. We walk a lot with our 4 dogs, and although you can walk into the area surrounding the lakes next door, it is not in any way managed and is quite wild. Some of the water is very black and smelly, although the widlife there and on the site is wonderful.
It is very difficult to walk onto the Nene Way offsite as you have to take your life in your hands to cross the little single lane bridge that is operated by traffic lights. The lorries crossing this bridge give no quarter.
The site facilities are very basic, I didn't use them but my husband told me the toilets were awful, smelly and there were lots of flies, but there are lots of people using such few facilities and they weren't kept clean. There is no recycling facility and all rubbish went into a skip.
I think this site is somewhat confused as to who it is providing a service to. There are those who live on the 8 or so permanently moored barges, several permanent caravans with residents, a number of tents plus caravanners like ourselves. We cannot say this is a true certificated site because of this, but it was quite relaxed and the people were friendly. We drove offsite and found some lovely walks and were almost tempted to stay on for another day.
A Wonderfully peaceful site in a very scenic location. Every one on site was genuinely welcoming and very friendly through out my stay, suffice to say I have made some good friends there.
The site is in a great location right on the river Nene so care is required if children present.
There is also a canoe hiring business on site for trips along the Nene.
Good routes to larger towns and supermarkets is handy also. As is a caravan shop in Rushden that sells a good variety of equipment if required.
There is also a reasonably well stock shop that sells the basics and fresh farm eggs including Goose and Turkey eggs which are delicious! also some great ice cream a strong recommendation for the toffee flavour!
Negatives:
The Showers and toilets are in a poor state of repair and are in need of some serious work to make good, but that being said they are kept clean to the best of the owners ability.
There is no dish washing facilities so own equipment will be essential!
The site is very basic and could use some TLC but for the tranquillity and relaxation value they can be forgiven. :)
I will return to this site as it is a really nice place to be, but work does need to be done to the amenities to improve!
We spent two nights on the site. Although we had a rather strange experience on arrival due to a big iron gate with a sign warning of dogs and no authorised entry which we felt was not a 'friendly welcome' as normally found on an affiliated site.
Forgive me if I am wrong on this affiliated site assumption. However we actually enjoyed our short stay despite the doom and gloom signs at the entrance.
The site sits beside the River Nene. It was lovely to see the canal type boats passing by and we enjoyed the walk round the huge loch despite losing our way.
Many thanks to the warden who helped us out with various information re residential homes that we were looking into. The site is very basic.
We didn't use the site facilities which did not look very enticing but the warden is planning improvements so we hope the next time we go there we will see big improvements.
I would not think the site is child friendly due to the close proximity of the river. We would definitely return if we were ever in that area.
My wife and I chose this site for a ten day break, as it was central for us to investigate our family history and visit National Trust/English Heritage properties in the area.
Initially, the site was difficult to find, we drove past it and then had an 'enjoyable' trip around the one-way system in Rushden, however, a quick phone call to the site owner, sorted us out. (Note, if coming from the Finedon direction, the site is immediately on the left after going through traffic lights and over the bridge, (opposite lorry depot).
The owner was there to meet us and of course chat. In three minutes we found out he used to live in the same village and street of not only my grandmother, but a cousin as well. What a great start, even before we had the steadies down.
The pitches are unmarked and we were sited to get the sun all day, with the front windows looking out to the river and Ditchford Lock. Narrow boats are moored at the edge of the site.
Water and electricity were both within twenty-five yards. The chemical toilet and rubbish disposal points were further, totally acceptable in a Certificated Site (CS).
The narrow boat owners, fellow campers and even the swans on the pond and river made us welcome.
There is fishing on site, in the small pond with the swans, an adjacent lake also owned by the site, but with a bit of a drive, and river fishing almost from your unit in season. If in a camper, the trip to the lake is difficult without transport, as is getting to the local shops in Rushden. The site however has a farm shop, some basic essentials and great ice cream.
The site is so tranquil, we lost track of time: we had to keep checking what day it was, let alone what the clock said. We just lapsed into peace, quiet and enjoy mode. Boats moved through the lock, Red Kites patrolled over head, the Swans had an away day. I fished a bit, well fed the fish with carefully placed maggots which made it easier for them to get.
There is canoe hire on site, with instruction: we did not try it.
My overall impression is that the site is fantastic. Families with children would have to take extra care, because you are surrounded by water, which is obviously unfenced. Dogs are welcome on a lead. Caravanning here is like it was in days of yore, no paved roads (yet), no serviced pitches, street lights, club house or regimentation, just friendly folk.
To summarise, work in progress, basic, easy to find, tranquil (traffic on the road outside is barely heard), convenient to Rushden, Wellingborough Northampton etc. We will be back.
Stayed at this gem of a site just for one night as we were en route to the continent. Great location right next to the river with working lock and sluice.
Extremely helpful and friendly owners. Toilet block just as it should be - basic and clean.
Our 8 year old enjoyed the river as much as we did, especially when a barge came through the lock and the owner invited him to take part in closing/filling it, etc.
Well stocked shop with lovely ice creams. Unable to comment on surrounding area as this was just a quick overnighter but would definitely visit again and for longer.
Excellent value for money.
