The campsite is set in a field of a working farm and is very quiet except for the mooing of the cows and the occasional tractor.
The owner seemed very laid back, but someone always seems to be around if you need anything. They sell sausages which unfortunately we did not get a chance to try.
The field is very comfortable for camping - the grass is very thick and although it rained on and off, there was no mud to contend with.
The facilities are satisfactory. I would not say that they are luxury, but they are incredibly clean and comfortable and the water is steaming hot! There is a covered area for washing dishes and a freshwater tap with a hose extension which makes filling water drums very easy.
Ashburton is the nearest village and it hosts a camping shop which is very convenient. It was Easter so almost everything was closed, but there seemed to be a big enough variety of shops. As the previous reviewer said, the site is very well located for Dartmoor.
We were cycling though and I wouldn't recommend heading into the moor from there by bike as it is all uphill!
Nearby is the English Heritage site of Berry Pomeroy Castle which is worth a visit.
The site is excellent value (£5 pppn). For that sort of price you usually get a portable loo, not a quality ablutions block.
Quiet and basic camping field on a working farm, the camping area consists of a large flat field with plenty of space for groups to huddle up out of the way of others, and plenty of space for kids to run. The facilities are basic but perfectly adequate, with an ablutions block offering ample hot water, showers, toilets, a washing up area, waste disposal (including chemical). Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a lead.
There is no shop on site, but there is a garage with a small shop around half a mile away down the hill, and Ashburton is only a few minutes away. The area has several pubs and restaurants near by.
Location location location. The Camp Site is right on the edge of Dartmoor and all that it offers, as well as only a short distance from the South Devon Coast. It is right next door to the River Dart Country Park, and considerably cheaper! Day tickets to the RDCP are available.
So. This site is perfect for campers or caravanner who are looking for good value basic facilities. At the time we were there it was £5 per person per night, £3 for kids under 16. So £16 per night for a family of 4. There are no laid out pitches, so you can have as much space as you need, and if you are part of a group you can all camp together.
We used the site purely as a base from which to go out from each day, returning at the end of the day to cook dinner (raised BBQ's allowed), relax and sleep before going out again the next day, and for this it was perfect.
