Have used this site many-a-time. My husbands family have used the site every year since my husband was a small boy and now we go to the same site together and I love it there too!
This site gives you a real sense of being away from it all, there are no shops unless you get in the car and drive to one so assuming you do not need to buy supplies then you can stay on the site and relax for your holidays.
Its just forest so please don't expect any toilet blocks or kids playgrounds because there are none. You must have a chemical toilet to stay on this site.
Although not having anything for kids to do as long as they can amuse themselves on pedal bikes and kicking balls then it is ideal. We go here most years and when we are at home in Kent we are just waiting to go back to the New Forest!
A beautiful clean site in amongst the trees, I cannot recommend it enough.
We stayed at Longbeech, for the record there are 280 pitches at Ocknell and 200 at Longbeech. This site is a peaceful no facility site, there are no picnic tables, no hook-ups, nothing except emptying points, waste bins and water supplies. The site was nowhere near full, even on a bank holiday weekend. There are secluded areas if you want to be a bit private. Safe for children to play but there are no play facilities, take their bikes.
Longbeech is about 3/4 mile from Ocknell where the site check in is, the wardening is also done from Ocknell. The area is typical New Forrest with plenty of walking or biking available. The nearest 'proper' shopping is in Fordingbridge, about 12 miles. There is a pub (the Sir Walter Tyrell) a 15 minute walk from the site across the forrest with a large garden and good food.
The site would benefit from a permanent warden as there were some nuisance rule breakers over the weekend. We would still visit again though.

September 2002 A very pleasant, peaceful and spacious site ( we stayed at the Ocknell site) but with very limited facilities. Male and Female toilet blocks, portaloo disposal points and rubbish bins and that's your lot!
No showers, Laundry or shop and the nearest pub is about 4 miles away at Brook ( there is the Green Dragon and The Bell Inn, where we went for lunch. Very nice food and very friendly and helpful staff) Sorry, I forgot to mention that they do have a couple of sinks for washing dishes but the hot water supply isn't very reliable.
One thing to bear in mind, if you are using a tent, the ground is a nightmare for pegging down. It is hard packed and has more stones than the average English Beach and they're all below the surface! Titanium pegs with Carbide tips would be a bonus here!
However, having made it sound like a right hole, I must also say that we had a lovely time there, relaxing and unhurried, regular visits from the cows and wild ponies added interest and you've got all the New Forest to explore plus a small fishing lake just a short walk away.
Great Site! Its was really nice that you can pitch a tent anywhere you like and to have your own space is great. It was nice to have the horses wondering around freely. Just keep your food in the tent.
But I wouldn't arrive in the dark, we had some of trouble looking for a good pitch, We did snap our front bumper in half because we went over a bump we didn't see and reversed back and snap!oops! The ground and the tent pegs don't really mix well. The ground is very stoney and its very hard to get your pegs in.The toilets there where kept clean and maintained during the stay there over the Bank Holiday weekend.
We are going to book again for next year when in reopens.
Nice spacious and quiet site, although as has been said before the A31 can be heard in the background but wasn' too intrusive. Toilets cleaned regularly, but no soap so take your own. Very easy access to the heath & woods surrounding the campsite, and there were a few ponies wondering throught the site during our stay. They "Sir Walter Tyrell" at nearby Rufus Stone is worth a visit for a pint or a meal. Would definitely go back again.
Stayed here for the bank holiday, and loved it.It was late on the saturday when we arrived, so struggled to find a big pitch, but found a lovely spot in a quiet corner. Its a good idea to arrive earlier in the day, even if youve pre booked.Spend some time to find the right pitch, and youl have a good camp.
The pitches are set in little clearings in the edge of the forest, some with hardstanding next to them.Theres a huge expanse of open heath, ideal for ball games, kites, and running around. Its grazed by ponies, cattle and donkeys, but they generally dont join in.
Facilities are sparse, no playground, only limited toilets, no showers, but we were fine. The kids made dens in the area around our tents, and made friends. We played hide and seek on the heath, and found some lovely walks. Some ponies insisted on eating the breakfast laid out for our neighbours, but they saw the funny side. The whole area is beautiful, and we plan to go back next year.
Take your basic food supplies, and a torch as there is only lighting near the toilets. Its a huge site but really doesnt seem it.Wish weed had longer there.
June 2004 This was our first ever camping trip and it didn't disappoint. We arrived on a Bank Holiday and despite the campsite being full to bursting, we found a great pitch. The location and surrounding countryside was great. We explored the forest, streams and ponds and the children named every pony and foal they met. The facilities are very basic but kept clean. We were there for three nights - any longer and I would need a site with showers! A word of warning: the ponies do come near the tents and we had a trampling incident - fortunately very little damage was done but it is a risk. All in all a great site.
