It seems that this campsite has not changed since the first reviews were posted in 2002! In fact.I don't think that the campsite has changed since the 70's! It was like being in a time warp.
Some of us had read the negative reviews on ukcampsite before we left so were expecting the worst, and we got it!
What more can I say, still no toilet paper! We spoke with the site manager when the loo roll had ran out by the Sunday evening and were told "I fill it up every morning, it's not my fault if you've used it all" Fair enough, you should be prepared when camping and take your own, but we had complained about the bar toilet not having any, you can't sit in the bar with a pint and a loo roll on your table!
The showers are still very, very basic and only work intermittently. Great if you can get one to work, but you might have to put a load of 20p's in all the cubicles then dance around naked until one actually starts to give out a trickle! Also, be prepared to be covered in soap when you get out due to the thing breaking down mid flow! Plus the site owners still feel that the best time to close the toilets and washing facilities for cleaning is 9am!
Oh yes, and if the weather's not too great and you think you'll be able to go into the club house for a bit of a warm, you'll need to give him 24 hours notice to switch the heater on (just in case he thought that no-one was going to go in that night!)
I could go on forever, but I won't! We actually had a great time, there was a big bunch of us and luckily we saw the funny side to it all and had a great laugh.
The site is in a lovely location and it could be very successful if the site owners modernised some of the facilities. It just needs a bit of TLC If I had the money, I'd make them an offer to buy it. It could be a great business
I have stayed at this site on a number of occasions as I visit a friend who lives in the area. I think it is really lovely and unspoilt, and very peaceful. I have met people who return there every year and love the tranquility. I have always found the site owners helpful.
As others have commented, the shower block is basic, but fully serviceable. The only time the hot water wasn't working was when someone had tampered with the controls. I feel sorry for site owners who have to cope with the behaviour of a small minority of campers who, for reasons known only to themselves, break and damage things.
I always look forward to going up there. It is a bit like a time capsule, especially the clubhouse which feels like something from the 60's! I love it!
I have just visited this site for the third time this year and will be back. If you want a luxury site this is not for you, but for beautiful scenery, wildlife, lots of space and peace and quiet it is perfect. The shower block is basic but clean and compares favourably to those in the New Forest. My only complaint are those people who constantly complain about the rain, [it's a fact of life it rains frequently in Cumbria] and lack of facilities, if you want more go elsewhere and leave the site to those who appreciate it.
Please be aware, this site has not improved since the last review. After looking at the website, we were thrilled when we were told there was vacancies for the Easter weekend of 2006 - however the "its not lovely at the moment. lets hope its gets better" from the female manager might have given us a hint!
The site was well signposted and in an absolutely beautiful location, views of the hills, a stream nearby, sounds of the "countryside" only.
What a total let down! We booked in with a trailer tent and awning, and were asked to pay IN ADVANCE - I have never known this happen before - later experience explains though.
The pitch we were given so on a very steep slope for a trailer tent and the ground was absolutely and totally saturated. We had been told at booking in that "the ground was wet, would that be a problem?" Now there's wet and there is sinking!
We persevered, and instead of the hour it usually takes us to pitch the tent and awning, took us nearly three hours due to the state of the site and having to push the car out of the mud that was supposedly "hard standing".
However, the final straw was the state of the "facilities" - the shower and toilet block was disgusting. Concrete floors, no mats, no toilet roll, 20p boxes (which we wouldn't have minded if we had been told!).
We finally complained to the management - what a waste of breath and emotion. "Its been raining, you should have expected the ground to be wet" was the stock excuse. We were offered two alternative pitches, but by now it was close to 8 o'clock and we didn't fancy striking then repitching in the dark! We then asked for a refund, but because we had been offered alternative, no refund was forthcoming.
This is a beautiful site and could be absolutely fabulous if some love and attention and care were given by the management.
This campsite is for hardened campers only who don't mind roughing it. The facilities are basic to say the least, whilst we were there the main toilet block was heard to be called a glorified cow shed and reminiscent of the Belsen gas chambers. If you have a caravan with a shower and toilet on board you may be OK. It appears that a lot of people on site were first-timers and everybody we spoke to had a complaint to make about the place.
Nestling in the beautiful Eskdale Valley close to Scafell, England's highest mountain and Wastwater, this site is a children's paradise in the heart of the Lake District. The first thing that meets you on arrival is the pond, fed by a stream and usually full of children paddling and playing on tyre rafts. The playground has zip wires, climbing frames, tyre rope-swings and adventure courses.
Grass pitches (some with EHU) for tents, motorhomes, VW-sized campervans (no caravans). Refurbished toilets, showers and laundry. Peace is the watchword on the campsite - catering mainly for families and couples with silence after 10.30pm. Don't forget your marshmallows - campfires are allowed in selected areas. Nearby shop and pub. And there's an added extra: the site sits along the route of the Ravenglass and Eskdale Steam Railway line, with it's own station. Choo Choo! Find out more here
March 2005 Well, two years on from the last review, and nothing has changed from 2003, Still a site to avoid, run by management that does not care about its customers. 5 showers in the gents, 5 of them accept money, but only one gives any water, and that a tepid dribble. No lights in the shower / washbasin area, so don’t go in the dark! No toilet paper in the toilets (for £15 a night, I expect toilet paper!) No floor mats in the showers, just painted concrete, and very cold!
Low voltage electricity when 10 units were connected to the system, kettle takes an age to boil, fridge inefficient. OK when there were only two vans hooked up. 9am in the morning isn’t the most convenient time for the cleaner to be in the toilets. Site reception never manned, so difficult to complain to anybody.
It’s a shame the management has no interest, as the site’s setting is beautiful and this could be such a nice site if properly managed.

We visited this camp site over the Jubilee weekend and were very disappointed with this site. The toilet blocks were old and didn't appear to be cleaned the whole time we were there. The ground was very uneven and hard making pitching very difficult if not impossible. There was an onsite pub which was very reasonably priced and there was even a disco! Overall I feel this was not one of the better sites situated within the lakes and feel very doubtful that we would return there again.
