We spent a few days here over the bank holiday weekend. We avoid sites with all the facilities on site so this fitted the bill even if it was on the spartan side.
The location is great over looking the sea and the whole ethos here is very relaxed. We bought veg from the local honesty box to supplement dinner and spent the days exploring the local footpaths.
The site is not the flattest, the toilets and showers are not the best but for the price we paid we expected nothing more. In 10 years time this site will probably be landscaped and terraced with loads of facilities but it will not be better for it. Less is more!
Just returned from a single (Saturday) night stay at Mount Folly.
Great location, easy walk to the beach. We took about 20 minutes dawdling with our 6 year old.
Traditional basic farm camping. Cheap with basic facilities. Several cold water taps available in the camping fields. Toilet and shower facilities in portcabins but clean, good water pressure and plenty of hot water. Showers were £1 for 7 minutes. No washing up facilities though to bring a big bowl and be prepared to heat up your own water.
Friendly farmer who will call around at some point and collect the fees.
This site is all about the views. It is basic but that is reflected in the price, if your looking for 5 star facilities then I would probably suggest you go else where. Toilets and showers are basic but very clean. It wasn't a problem for me and like I said worth putting up with for the sea views and view of the island. Short walk to the beach quite steep on the way back, dog friendly and you can have camp fires in raised fire pits. I would recommend this site to campers who are there to enjoy the scenery and peaceful setting.
We have been coming here for 15 years, adore the location, campsite freedom, views, friendly Farmer (John Tucker, salt of the earth!)
Cant believe those that whine about the basic ablution facilities - its a campsite people! John has made real efforts this year to placate the whingers - please go to the River Dart country park if you want sterile /regulated/ boot camp !
Really - there are very few proper campsites left in this country with the location, relaxed close to nature feel of this place - we love it and return as often as we can.
A somewhat different site, with 'interesting' facilities and an even more unique owner.
We stayed here whilst walking the coast path and were only here for one night, but enjoyed our stay. Whilst the site itself is not particularly attractive, the views are great looking down on Burgh Island. The facilities are not the best, being in old portacabins, but they were clean.
The stay however, was made by the owner who kindly offered to provide a lift to the start of our days walking, although a little late by the time he arrived, he still insisted on teaching my friend and his wife how to waltz and then on the way drove into a ploughed field to show us his as yet growing cauliflower. A most amusing start to a days walking.
The immediate area around the site is not amazing and as previously commented there are not many local facilities. However, the walk from Bantham to Bigbury is fantastic, tough but beautiful.
I may possibly find my way here again one day, hoping that whilst the site could benefit from quite a few improvements, that it hasn't changed one bit.
Award-winning camping and glamping on the edge of Dartmoor National Park near Tavistock, Devon. 40 grass and hardstanding pitches for tents, touring caravans and motorhomes with optional electric hook-ups. Choose between the scenic Daffodil Field with moorland views or the sheltered old walled garden. For those preferring a bit more comfort, the park provides camping pods and mega pods.
Immaculate facilities with free hot showers, toilets, hairdryers, underfloor heating, laundry, dishwashing, games room, small shop, WIFI and playground. The onsite manor house hosts a dog-friendly restaurant and bar serving evening meals. Surrounded by mature woodlands with direct access to Dartmoor, with Tavistocks amenities just a short drive away. Perfect spot to explore Devon and Cornwall's main attractions Find out more here
I would like to say this campsite was a little gem indeed. The views were stunning. When we arrived we were greeted most warmly and paid by the day, weather was a bit hit and miss but that did not put us off. The facilities are basic but that is explained so no problem they do the job. Bit of advice it can get windy but the views are worth it!
Although spacious pitches, lovely views, basic but adequate latrines/showers - the area was characterless! The surrounding buildings - except for the farm - are predominantly modern bungalows. No lovely, quaint villages to walk to - just the beaches and an absolutely awful -kiss me quick- holiday village in challaborough bay. However, excellent café at bigbury on sea but, apart from that, no-where else to walk to and eat out. This site/area are ok to visit for a few days, but unless you want to walk to a beach everyday, you would need to explore further afield by car. Nearest nisa convenience store in challaborough - could do with one on, or nearer to, campsite.
To be honest, i've seen better in cornwall - much more dramatic/interesting/exciting/varied. However, liked this site but not the mundane area.
This is a great campsite! We spent a week here and had an enjoyable time. I agree with the other comments that the on site shower and toilet facilities weren't great however we chose this site for the peace and quiet and beautiful location.
The campsite is located near many public rights of way so there are lots of lovely walks to be had 'from your doorstep'. We did the Avon estuary walk which entailed a trip across the estuary in a lovely wooden boat. Make sure that you check the ferry operating times before you head down the cliff as it is a bit of a slog to the top again!
In terms of shops and evening eateries we found that there were not many useful facilities at Bigbury-on-Sea itself. The nearest (small) supermarket is at Challaborough which is about 30 mins walk (downhill) from the campsite. In terms of eateries we stumbled across The Journey's End Inn in nearby Ringmore. I thoroughly recommend a visit to this lovely quaint old pub. The food is great and there were lots of cask ales avaliable too. I would recommend that you book in advance as it is so popular. Again Ringmore (which is worth a visit anyway as it is so pretty) is about 30 mins walk away but up two big hills!
Overall we really enjoyed camping here. Try and pitch up behind a hedge as it can be very windy!
This would have been a wonderful campsite had it not been for the ugly eyesore that constitute the facilities. It`s in a lovely spot with great views along the coast, within walking distance of beautiful beaches. However everything is spoiled by the rusting ramshackle portakabins with very basic interiors and light switches hanging by the wires and not working. No hot water to the sinks and very uninviting showers at £1 a go. Rubbish strewn around and shoved under the portakabins and the hole over the sewer pipe covered by a paving slab, which is the waste water disposal point, surely contravenes health and safety regulations.
Come on owners. Spend a little to bring the facilities up to scratch and this would be a fantastic site.
A fantastic campsite in walking distance to a superb beach, kids loved body boarding and watching the pro s kite surfing. Views were spectacular could sit and look at them all day :-) on arrival after my first experience of Cornish country roads we drove onto campsite unsure where to pitch, spent about 5 mins driving around in my campervan decided on a sea view unaware of the high winds :-( spent about 30 mins TRYING to attach awning, gave up and went for the wind breakers for shelter from the wind but after nearly loosing mine and kids heads and a visit from farmer/owner of site we were advised not to bother, lovely chap who pointed out where the facilities were showers/loos ect and would be back once we were settled to take payment. Owner came back after a short while and told us it would be £12 for the night. Very reasonable :-) gave the kids a pound each to get a ice cream which was a lovely touch. All in I would highly recommend Mount Folly Farm if you want the space, freedom for kids to play, close to beach, value for money, very friendly staff :-) if you want level pitches, top notch facilities and no wind it might not be for you but otherwise it's one of the best coastal camp site I have been to :-)
Ps we did have the aftermath of hurricane Bertha so might not be as windy as we had it !
