1.Helpful friendly staff. 2.Quiet peaceful location. 3. Clean, very well appointed caravan it really was nice and had a fantastic shower. 4. Site had a cared for appearance. 5. Handy small shop. 6. Only a short walk to Dawlish Warren.
Bad points none really about the site apart from a lack of recyling facilities.
Dawlish Warren wasn't really for us a bit Blackpool and static city but that dosen't mean it was bad it just wasn't our bag, niceish beach though. Nearby kids loved Pennywell Farm great day out, thought Diggerland was very expensive £45 for 2 adults and one 4 year old ( 2 year old was free) to get in plus lots of machines £1 here £1 there. Brixham was very nice enjoyed crabbing at the harbour.
We arrived at Golden Sands first impression was 'oh my god'!
Good points as follows:
1. Helpful Friendly staff.
Bads points: Not really sure where to start so here goes in no particlar order.
1. Very run down shabby appearance, litter, peeling paint etc. 2. Do not believe the website description of the Pool it was tiny. (We did not use it). 3. Exteriors of the staics that we saw where in a very poor shape. 4. Childrens playarea terrible, broken swings jagged metal sticking out overflowing broken bins it was really, really terrible. 5. The club house was full of Christmas decorations nothing for halloween at all as it was October half term this seemed a bit odd.
Walked through the touring area and it looked really poor muddy and very cramped. We had the misfortune to use the toilet block and it was shockingly bad.
After we had walked aroung waiting to check in we where not sure if we where going to stay or not, we wanted to see the static first.
We had booked a gold plus and on checking in where told they had none left and we could have a silver instead. We said NO WAY we would not stay in that case and so they offered us a gold plus at their sister park which is called Peppermint Park and oh joy of joys it was great, clean, quiet and well looked after. I cannot comment what interiors of the caravans are like at Grotty Sands as we did not hang around to look.
Ps: Pennywell Farm is great and Dawlish is nice, Diggerland is very expensive, Brixham is lovely great for crabbing.
Used this campsite to visit relatives nearby,a typical holiday type park with small pitches and large open areas,being Oct. It was quiet but dread to think what it would be like peak times Aug. Toilets/showers adequate though a little outdated,reception was friendly, that said it was very cheap at £8 /night for two with ehu,hardstanding and own tap. Site excellent for cyclists being mainly flat,I cycled along cycle route 2 to Exeter and back or you can take the train from nearby Dawlish Warren station with the bike if you want to. Area good for walking also with a nice coastal path walk to Dawlish Town. Didn't use the clubhouse as prefer proper pubs the best of which was the GBG listed old nautical pub The Anchor at Cockwood with a nice looking menu and Otter ales. Probably would return as a quick stopover if in the area and was out of season.
For the price of the pitch you would expect the ground to be level, but no quite a slope. Toilets always running out of hand soap and toilet paper, reported it several times, showering area very small, two morning sick on the floor at the entrance to the toilets. The only positive was the shop staff were helpful. The swimming pool was more like a deep'ish paddling pool, about 4 foot all over.
We had a lovely weekend in Peppermint Park. The price was very reasonable - just £12 per night to include electric hook up and use of all the facilities.
We arrived about 7.30pm so reception was closed but our pack was affixed to the door with some others and a map of the park. The pitches are not very large and it did feel a bit crammed in but the park wasn't full which helped.
In terms of our little boy we had the best pitch of any campsite we have visited so far as the caravan backed onto a grassy hill with a playpark at the top so he could play safely.
The playpark was a little disappointing with broken fences, swings and no zip on the zip slide. However we also used the one at Dawlish sands which was lovely.
Never saw a warden but did go into reception on Saturday to ask a few questions and she was very friendly and helpful.
The surrounding area is beautiful with lots to do and see. It's possible to walk to Dawlish Sands beach so you don't have to pay to park the car. The beach at Dawlish is very pebbly.
We used the indoor swimming pool at Dawlish Sands park which was nice temperature and reasonably clean.
The toilet and shower block at Peppermint Park was clean with plenty of hot water.
We didn't use the clubhouse but the shops were well stocked.
A very enjoyable weekend we will almost certainly go back next year.
The pitches was small and water logged and muddy I am glad I was not in a tent. One of the shower blocks the floor tiles was lifting do to poor repair but the other shower block was clean with very hot water. When we checked we was asked if we wanted passes for the entertainment at £2 per adult per night.
The site shop was very clean with friendly staff and fair prices for a site shop.
This was my second visit to Peppermint Park, but since last year the standards had dropped back and I believe that the owners are concentrating on filling the park with Mobile Homes and it seemed staff were being kept busy siting these homes rather than Park maintenance. During our stay rubbish bins were full, recycling bins were not in use, dog waste bins were not being emptied and poo bags were either stacked on top of bins or piled up below. The shop was only open for a couple of hours in the morning and afternoon with no bread products as they were short of staff, so we used the excellent bakery shop on the road next to the site. The toilets were not as clean as last year.
To sum up it was good value with the 'Sun' discount vouchers
We had a nice weeks holiday at Peppermint. No problems with site. Toilets and showers clean plenty of them and free. Ground was level although lots of rain for few days before we arrived and the ground was wet,site rang to let us know about this which I thought was good.[took wellies in preparation,though didn't need them.]
Didn't use club which is on sister site[golden sands] went in for a nosey had one drink came out,bit dowdy and nowhere to sit outside with your drinks. Had a nice meal in Mount Pleasant Inn, short walk from site on hill, overlooking the sea[booking essential if you want a sea view whilst you eat, but you can go on spec with a short wait] food is delicious.
Bus stop [no.2] taking you to Exeter or Teignmouth and lots of other places,outside gates on main road.[saves driving everywhere] Geralds supermarket round corner, cafe, pubs arcades, casino and beach all within walking distance.
We had lots of days out to some interesting and beautiful places and Dawlish is walkable along the beach but we got train back!
Even my teenage daughter and her friend enjoyed our stay here, would go back again in future.
We were told by our neighbouring campers that this site had recently been taken over by Park Holidays. There used to be a swimming pool and club / bar on site but probably due to cost cutting they’ve closed down. The options are therefore to use the facilities in the neighbouring Park Holidays static caravan sites – Dawlish Sands or Golden Sands. From where we were pitched, Golden Sands was the closest and the facilities were pretty much what you’d expect. We didn’t try out the evening ‘entertainment’ but did go in the bar (free wifi) and did go into the swimming pool – indoor / outdoor combo which was really good on a nice day and there’s also seating around the pool too.
Our experience of camp sites is limited because we were only bitten by the camping bug this year and this was the third site we’ve visited. So out of three, we’d definitely put it at the bottom of the list but feel we’ve been spoilt by the other two.
We had EHU so were in the first camping area, quite close to the toilets / showers. The pitches in this area are either side of the road leading round the site so need to be careful with kids running about with cars constantly driving past. Behind our tent was the kids playground which was very popular. Bad design of the site meant that there was no direct access point into the playground so the kids needed to go through someone’s pitch. We had a couple of windbreaks up – more worried about kids tripping over the guy ropes – and others had done the same.
The pitches were very close together so getting along with the neighbours is handy.
The showers and toilets did not seem to be cleaned regularly or at least not cleaned thoroughly. The same bits of rubbish were still there a day or so later and we ended up throwing them away ourselves. To be fair it’s difficult to keep the floors clean when it’s on the muddy side around the site. Showers worked fine but as others have said – don’t take too much in with you because the cubicles are small and everything tends to get a soaking. The second block was apparently better.
Will probably be back to Dawlish Warren because we like it as it has all we need for a family break.
From arriving at reception, holiday started to go down hill. Pitch allocated was under trees, where low branches were scraping top of tourer. Requested another pitch, but then found that it was waterlogged. Then reluctantly allocated another pitch which was not much better, but tired of going back & forth pitched up. Everyone we spoke to were unhappy with this site, and had we found another site with spare capacity, would willingly have left. The ladies toilet area smelt badly, and 1 of the 3 toilets was out of order (possibly causing the smell). The gents toilet area was fairly clean. Waste water disposal was a drain next to the road. Had tents on pitches where it would have made more sense to have tourers as there was more space. Had site been full toilet facilities would be insufficient. Shop expensive.
Peppermint is a medium size park and doesn't seem to have changed much in about 15 years. The clubhouse could do with a complete overall although I believe the park has been taken over by park holidays so maybe a refurb will take place. The shower blocks are warm, clean and plenty of toilets,sinks. Although I like this park I wouldn't rave about it but my children on the other hand love peppermint ages 8,11,& 13. The surrounding area is good you can park up the car for the week and mooch about.
This is a well maintained large family park which joins up with its sister site to provide the family entertainment bit, The site provides a large basic vandal proof type shower / toilet block, a well stocked shop with camping spares & WI-FI for about £10 a week (but this only works in certain areas !)
Nothing special just a typical large family commercial site !
Dawlish is a nice little town with the basic shops to keep you going, Dawlish Warren is OK with a beautiful nature reserve.
Exeter is everything you would expect from a large city, you will be spoilt for choice shopping here, and obviously you can get the train from Dawlish !
Unfortunately this area does not have the same magic that is found in other parts of Devon & Cornwall, to sum it up 'nice but dull'
Went from Good Friday to Wednesday after Easter Monday.
On arrival the counter staff were friendly, and although the warden was not around, explained where our pitch was and what number.
The pitch was quite small, but having a motor home and trailer tent either side, we had enough to fit in. The only downside was there was not enough room to park my car. Had to park tight in front of tent to keep off road.
The pitch was flat and EHU easy to get to. We were near the play park which my kids loved. As we were near the closed for reurbishment shop, and nearer to the statics, the toilet block was near and very clean. The showers were always hot. Be careful not to take too many clothes in with you as the blast goes past the screen and soaks everything!
Very upset that there was no entertainment on site. Did try Dawlish sands not that was not very good.
Don't know what it would be like in the summer, although the site did seem quite full and all seemed to be fine.
Great location for exploring Devon and Dawlish etc.
On arrival at the site had friendly welcome from reception staff, who showed us on the map of the park what pitch number we where and told us the warden was busy at present but would be around to see us (never did come, not that I'm bothered) Found our pitch which was not too far from the toilet block, which was good as we had our two kids and my niece and nephew. Luckily the whole time we were there no one was pitched either side of us, because it would have been bit of a squash, pitch sizes seemed to vary, the majority being quite small, ours was quite flat, but a lot of sites quite hilly. There is no entertainment venue on peppermint park, you have to walk into neighbouring golden sands, which is up quite a steep hill, would be difficult for the elderly or disabled! Toilet block fairly modern and I have to say the showers were lovely, just the right temperature and a decent power, kept clean throughout our stay! The entertainment venue at golden sands was ok if you like standing by the bar til after 10pm waiting for a table and chairs to become available, bar staff nice, entertainment very good just a shame its not a larger room, dread to think what its like July / August! Arcade for the kids a bit small really and pricey as is any arcade! Dawlish warren itself is nice, had a meal in the boathouse pub on the front, between 5 and 6 is happy hour rump steak, chips, peas, mushrooms and onion rings for £6.95, but other meals pricey and very busy at this time! Walked along the coastal path to Dawlish took about 45 minutes, Dawlish very pretty with a lovely small lake with ducks and geese, kids liked this! Caught the train back cost us about 65p each,cant fault that! Overall I don't think the campsite is as bad as some reviews make out, but not really sure if we would go back to peppermint, the weather didn't really help as it was very mixed and not particularly warm for easter!
Great friendly site with good facilities. Great and professional entertainment for all ages - from children's clubs through to Bingo. Clean shower facilities - and plenty of them. Would recommend. Very close to train station - and tourist attractions. Most suited for families (we are a couple only). Good takeaway service from site shop - and emergency camping equipment (ie pegs) available. Peaceful location. A very enjoyable stay.
