What a wonderful little site! The owners are friendly and helpful and although basic the facilities never seemed too busy.
This is a very basic site but just what I wanted. Lovely big fields to walk to dog in and the day kennels were very helpful and well priced.
Vicky (the owner) was always happy to help even offering to pop a wash load in her machine when my dog had an accident! all in all very basic but friendly and calm considering the amount of dogs.
For the first time in our lives we are planning to revisit the same site twice! see you next year!
Just got back from a wonderful 2 weeks at Ashcroft Farm.
As most of the reviews state, it's a very dog friendly site
There is a large field next to the site, just pass the shower & toilets.
There is also another 2 large fields to the right & behind the toilets, just follow the path.
We also found just 5 mins drive or a 15 min walk some woods, with a dry path to walk through.
Turn left out of the site, follow the road & first left again, you're find the woods with some parking on the right.
Dogs must be on a lead within the site, we just tied ours to a long rope, nobody including the owner said anything.
Most other caravans had windbreakers around their unit or a pen to keep them in.
Do accept a little noise from the other dogs, as some caravans have more then 1, which never really bothered us.
There is only 1 shower, but never had to wait.
Very basic, but always hot water.
The site is on a slight slope, which was fun with the awning.
I think next time we would park our van down & not across.
The site is off the beaten track & we found the roads advised to take by the owners a little narrow, but the best way in.
You just hope you don't meet anyone as it is really only a single track with some passing places.
The village is only a 5 min drive, it has a costcutter, which is open till 9 every day, there is also a chip shop which is only open Thursday, Friday & Saturday evenings.
No pub in the village, the nearest we tried was the Hoops on the main A39 which is dog friendy, with good food if a little pricey.
Another pub which is also dog friendly is called the the smithy in welcombe.
The nearest big super store is Asda, head towards Bideford A39 first roundabout turn right, turn right again at the Atlantic village.
The only bad things we could tell you, when first arrived they had cut the grass without picking it up.
It was raining & as you could imagine, we were walking it everywhere.
Vicky the owner was very friendly and sorry about the grass and looking at getting a machine to pick all the grass up.
We were also bitten by horse flies quite a bit, so take some insert repellant.
On the whole very relaxing well priced ( £14. 50 with hook up a night ) 2 weeks.
Returned from this site last week after 2 weeks in glorious Devon.
The site owner arrived shortly after we did to ensure that everything was fine. She had selected a pitch for us near the entrance so that it was level. Towards the bottom of the field there is a slope. They are working towards getting most of the pitches with electricity and water shared between 2 pitches which certainly makes it easier for a motorhome user. This is a serious dog friendly site with just about every pitch having at least 1 dog. There is a huge field next to the camping field for dog walking (please remember to pooper scoop even if it is a field!
As the information says the site is basic with a small washing up sink, 1 shower and 3 unisex loos but nobody seemed to have a problem in the 2 weeks we were there. The views are stunning (almost as good as we have up here!)and it was great to just sit on the site and enjoy the peace and quiet and the stars at night. There is no play area for the children as such but a large area in the centre of the field where we all got involved in the games. This didn't deter them from enjoying themselves. The pitches are double size and allows you to have an awning, windshields or even a compound for your animals.
Vicki was really helpful even to phoning her brother and cousins to find out church service times in the village!. Alas the pub in the village is no longer but there is a useful local store and a chippy which opens towards the end of the week. Take her advice about some of the places to visit. We tried Bucks Mill but be careful the car park entrance is very small and certainly wont take a motorhome. Sandymouth is a great beach once the tide is out there is a vast expanse of golden sands and there are also lifeguards. Go to Clovelly in the evening and enjy a drink at The Red Lion or pay £6. 50 per adult to go through an exhibition and video during the day!
The Old Smithy at Welcome is brilliant and again dog friendly. The food is ace but there is a surprise don't be fooled by the name it is old but has shabby chic 70's posters and furniture. You feel as though you can be yourself and the staff are really friendly.
A really good site and one we recommend and if we can get down to Devon we will be back.
This was our second visit to this dog and human friendly site. Although the amenities are basic we cannot recommend more highly this site. Set in glorious country side and close to beautiful unspoiled beaches this is a site we will visit time and time again. The village shop stocks most items but if needed Bideford has supermarkets and numerous small shops If you are looking for a friendly site where you and your dogs are made welcome this is the site for you
We have just returned from 7 nights at this lovely site. There were only 2 other caravans on site. The facilities are, as previously commented on, quite basic and I would imagine get quite busy when more people on site, but we found them ideal for our stay. There is a great dog walking field right behind the site which is perfect for those early morning and late night walks. It is a site that makes you feel like there's plenty of room for everyone. Spacious pitches. We did 2 days on the Tarka Trail, 1 coastal walk to Hartland Point and 2 days boogie boarding at Westward Ho (the dog friendly end by the golf course, Northam Burrows or something like that) A great beach, sandy and huge and long. There is an Asda at Atlantic Village not too far away, app 10-15 mins and there is a Morrisons in Bideford. Over all we had a great week and would recommend this site. DO NOT follow sat nav in though, follow the sites directions, quite narrow lanes to get to the site :)
It's a rare gem. Owner Vicki is delightful, the pitches are really big and sited around the outsides of a well maintained paddock, thus giving a huge central area for the (few) kids to play whilst avoiding the cram-them-in grid like pattern many sites employ. It never feels busy, I mentioned this, assuming the site to be under booked - when in fact it was almost full.
Facilities are basic, one shower (which runs for a generously long time before cut off) with plenty of hot water. There are three unisex loos and 2 basins plus a washing up area. Not a lot at first glance, but they are rarely busy as vans and caravans seem to like this site and those folk I assume use their own facilities.
They are not the smartest facilities ever encountered, but then real campers have no need for pristine shower blocks and hand pumps of moisturiser. Waste and recycling facilities are really good, no smells, well managed.
What about dogs? This place is seriously dog friendly - I get the impression this is a huge bonus for many. On both visits, we met people who stay for long periods, I guess largely due to this. The on farm walking is extensive, whilst a short walk up the road you will find coniferous woodland tracks to explore.
A short dive and you are on wonderful dog friendly beaches. I did not find a pub that was not dog friendly (and yes I tried loads). I took 3 dogs, and most other campers had an average of 2.
Don't be put off if you are not dog friendly however - dogs are to be kept on leads on the camp site, and due to the space between pitches, it did not feel like the AGM of the canine species. I barely heard a bark throughout our 2 week stay, although I apologise to the people in the tent next door who had a super market sweep style ram raid from my ever hungry young collie at 1 am =/.
There is a village shop in Woolsery village, a short car ride or a 20 min walk away. It opens early, closes late and is run by hugely friendly folk. They sell pretty much everything including local produce - sausages, bacon, eggs, cheese and alcohol. They also make a mean cup of coffee and serve warm sausage rolls, pasties etc. All with a smile.
Next door to the shop is a fish and chip shop (jolly nice!) and a pub, which is friendly and fine for ales. The food is fine but basic and in my humble opinion, not worth the price tag attached.
However there are plenty of other options and two particularly superb pubs to be found slightly further afield - The Old Smithy at Welcombe is quite simply fabulous. Wonderful food, dog and child friendly, really lovely innkeepers, great ale, fabulous ambiance - we absolutely adore this pub! Spend your money here! Not to be missed!
The Bush Inn at Morenstowe is also well worth a visit. Less family house, more pubby but still charming, lovely staff, gorgeous setting. If you go to 2 pubs, let these be them! If you are lucky to be at either on Folk Night, you'll enjoy a very talented group of locals jamming away. We were even invited to visit one of the musicians studios in the morning to see how he makes guitars etc! What a friendly lot!
A 20 minute drive away, Sandymouth beach is perfect for families, life guards patrol a section of the beach, making it possible not to stand watching in case the kids get themselves into mischief the entire time. Dogs love it here. Surf school is superb, lovely guys, super friendly. Parking can be horrendous though, so go plenty early enough before low tide to assure a spot.
Smaller charming beaches include Peppercombe, lovely at low tide and never busy due to the walk down to it I suppose (one of its assets I think). Westward Ho! has a huge beach, accessible at all tides apart from very high, wonderful for dogs and again, life guard patrolled. Great chippy in centre of W. Ho! I have never enjoyed a fish so much!
Have I mentioned the friendly hairy fisherman? Or Cliff the Super Dog? Or beautiful Duckpool at Low tide?
So in essence - 1) lovely owners who were not phased by us turning the corner of their site into a mini Glastonbury of tents. 2) Wonderful local facilities but close to the A39 thus easy to whizz to Bude, Bideford or Barnstable (great indoor/outdoor tennis centre - look up Tarka Tennis) 3)Basic facilities more than compensated by the space and tranquillity of the site.
A great site for those who love camping, not glamping. So just perfect.
Fantastic campsite with wonderful views for miles. You have 60 acres of the farm-land to explore, which our two dogs found great. It is in a quiet location and not all that far from Bideford or Bude with the local shop and pub within walking distance from the site.
The only let down we had was the price of visiting Clovelly - £5. 95 entry per person! So we made a sharp exit.
The facilities were basic but clean and well kept and the site wasn't crowded.
We met Vicki from the farm on arrival and she was very friendly and helpful giving us advice on the site rules and how to get to the local shop etc
This will be our 3rd visit this year, we have found a lovely site with lovely owners. Small toilet block with a good shower, gets a bit grass in there! but then it is a farm.
Lots of space for the dogs.
Hookups good. Pitch sizes very good.
Did the farm tour which was very interesting and there is a surprise waiting for the kids when visiting the chickens.Northam burrows very good beach, dog friendly, lots of space to play and fly kites and the lifeguarded beach. Farmers arms ok in village, local shop has most things.
This is the first site we have ever stayed at and it has got us well and truly hooked.
The site was perfect for us, our two year old son and two dogs - we loved it! The facilities consisted of a small toilet block, shower and washing up area as well as a rubbish area and whilst they might be a bit too minimal for some, it was exactly what we were after.
The owners were friendly and helpful and we would definitely come back here again
This site is exactly what we were looking for, it is quiet, fairly isolated with plenty of room for the dogs to have a run about. We were given a warm welcome and given a brief description of where everything was. Although it may come across as a little basic, for us it was perfect.
A small, well maintained site in beautiful countryside. There was always hot water for showering and washing, and the facilities were cleaned regularly. I will definitely be recommending this site to anyone who asks for a dog friendly site. I will most certainly be going back!
