Met by friendly warden and shown to pitch. Useful small shop and you can order daily paper. Site is very neat and well maintained.

Hedges all round ensure a good degree of privacy. Unfortunately the hedge to the rear was very tall and cut off the sunshine - we were told they were due to be cut down some.

The toilet and shower block was always very clean and a good recycling area.

The showers were just a cubicle with no partitions so it was not easy to keep clothes dry while showering.

Wifi was good close to reception.

Would definitely return

Just returned from a perfect holiday at Hill Cottage Farm where we received a very warm and friendly welcome from the new wardens. The facilities are spotless and the grounds well maintained, providing secluded fully serviced hardstanding pitches or plenty of open space on grass if preferred. Childrens play area, a couple of nice walks around the lakes or around the field where we wandered at dusk and spotted deer on more than one occasion. The site has chickens whose eggs are sold in shop and is well located for some great shopping in Southampton, Salisbury and Bournemouth, beautiful beaches at Bournemouth and Sandbanks and is right on the edge of the New Forest where we visited the motor museum at Beaulieu, hired bikes in Burley and went pony spotting. A great time, we will be back.

We have just returned from Hill Cottage Farm after a 9 night stay in our folding camper. On arrival you are shown your pitch and all the site facilities and rules were explained to us before the warden left us to set up. The site was very clean and quiet and the facilities were spotless. The site wardens were always very helpful and polite. The pitch hedgerows gave us extra privacy and also extra protection during a windy day, which would be very beneficial on some other sites we visited over the years!

After thinking long and hard we have nothing but praise for the site and staff.

Will we return next year? Yes.

We booked this site to stay at during the August Bank holiday weekend, a group of 20 of us in 5 tents. Some of our party arrived approximately 40 mins early (check in time from Mid-day) but the friendly lady at reception allowed us to check-in and pay for our stay.

A friend and some of the children required the toilet but the main block was being cleaned (cleaning time is 11am to 12pm daily); however as our pitches were located on the Rally Field we were allowed to use the facilities there whilst waiting to be guided to our pitches.

The Rally Field has rather an old portable building with toilets and washing up area although the main toilets, showers and washing up area are located around the corner from reception and are much nicer. The toilets were always in an acceptable condition but not the cleanest I have come across which is surprising given the 5 pennant AA standard awarded, I would have expected the toilets to be cleaned at least twice a day due to this accreditation.

As we were a group of friends, we have always been allowed to pitch our tents in a circle or square formation and have a communal area in the middle. Unfortunately at Hill Cottage Farm this does not seem allowed although there was a large group in one corner that had been set up like this; we had to pitch in a straight line with our cars parked in front of our tents.

A friend bought his gazebo but additional site rules state that these cannot be bigger than 3m x 3m which seems rather restrictive to me because a larger gazebo shared by 20 people would take up less space than 'five' 3m x 3m gazebo's pitched next to each other should we have chosen to do this.

During our first afternoon and evening we experienced some heavy showers but the ground coped well and did so for the rest of our stay, in fact the ground was still firm when we packed up and some of the tent pegs were difficult to pull out.

The site seemed quite well sheltered from the wind unless we were just lucky that it never got too gusty during our stay. The Rally Field itself is fairly level, gently sloping in one direct down to the play area. The pitch sizes looked large enough although we probably pitched our 5 tents closer to each other than if we had been camping alone.

As mentioned in other reviews there is no shop on site although reception sells a small selection of provisions, the kids loved going there to buys their sweets! Reception also sells Croissants and Baguettes on request which was useful on our last morning when we didn't want to cook a breakfast.

I was also able to connect my mobile phone to the Wi-Fi network if I was in close proximity of the reception area. Above reception is a family games room with full size snooker table, 2 pool tables and a table tennis table - however this does feel tight on space if all the tables are in use.

When the kids weren't buying sweets they were usually in the play area at the bottom of the Rally Field which was not too far away from our tents. When the site is busy there is little room for ball games which is a bit of a shame. Around the corner but out of sight are some chickens which the children liked to visit but adults are required to go with them.

A footpath next to the play area takes you around a field and into the woods; this path can be used to take you to the local village pub in Alderholt. I think the walking time is advertised at approximately 20 mins although I would allow double this time if walking with small children especially if there has been significant rain because the path through the woods got rather muddy in places.

The pub itself (The Churchill Arms) is a very nice Hall and Woodhouse owned pub serving real ales and food. It was dark when leaving the pub so we chose to walk back by the road to the campsite which is mainly under street lighting except the last half mile or so, be prepared with torches if doing this at night. As well as a pub Alderholt also has a small village Co-Op which I think is open until 10pm daily.

The evening 'noise curfew' at 10:30pm was enforced during our stay, we were once reminded of this at 10:40pm. However I'm not sure when the 'noise curfew' is lifted in the morning, we were woken around 5am in the morning when children in the party next to us were making a noise!

Fordingbridge is only a short drive away with pubs, supermarket and choice of take-a-ways (Pizza, Kebabs, Fish and Chips, Chinese and Indian) to choose from. Although I didn't explore the town itself a friend took his son to a nice park which also had a sand pit for the children to play in.

In summary this is a pleasant site to stay at if you are willing to accept the site rules but it hasn't put me off possibly returning at some point in the future.

First impressions were of a very neat and well maintained site. Greeting was friendly and we were shown to our pitch, the notorious pitch 12 from previous reviews. It was cosy more than cramped but adequate for our camper van with the side canopy out and with room for a car as well.

Hedges all round ensure a good degree of privacy. Unfortunately the hedge to the rear which was the boundary of the site had grown so prolifically in the wet, warm conditions that we had no view of anything and it added to the feeling of being hemmed in. It also meant that we lost the evening sun quite early.

The toilet and shower block was always very clean but was a little 'dated' and the showers were just a cubicle with no partitions so it was not easy to keep clothes dry while showering.

We were there during a school holiday and while there was a children's play area in the adjoining field the noise was not intrusive. The real noise came from the farmer whose field was behind the tall hedge behind our pitch. He seemed determined to get some kind of very loud piece of machinery on to that field at least once a day.

The site is very convenient for the town of Fordingbridge and the New Forest with its lovely walks and excellent pubs. The pub in Alderholt itself was okay but never busy and we did not eat there so cannot comment on food quality.

The dogs walk is basically a couple of paths and a wooded area behind the village.

Overall a very pleasant, mostly quiet site in a very good location.

On arrival we noticed the neat and tidiness of the site along with a nice welcome.

Good points - location of site is good for local village, nice walk to pub (longer than the 5 mins advertised), lovely views and quietness. Good information room for the local area inc discount vouchers etc for local attractions.

The not so good points - in the camping field, units are expected to be very squashed together (we were between a winnebago and a tent and then was expected to also fit our family in a tent between them) when the winnebago left, another caravan was positioned even closer, despite there being lots of room all round the site! We did mention this and the new caravan was moved about one metre over. Also, the toilets were not as clean as the ones in the caravan area, even though they were supposed to be cleaned daily - but still usable. Perhaps, the owners could take this into consideration.

Overall, the site was fantastic, family friendly, dog friendly, clean, great facilities and nice fellow campers. Also another fantastic thing was the showers which we hardly ever had to wait for (despite being Jubilee Weekend) and were always hot.

Thanks for a lovely stay, we would definitely return.
