2 Reviews of the Shade Grabber

By: JohnTerry  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2017   Rating:

Since my last review, I found the Shade Grabber can be a useful addition to a much smaller tent - adding protection and providing additional sheltered space for e.G. Cooking.

See the photo of the Shade Grabber fixed over a one-person MSR Elixir 1. A great way of getting more use out of the item providing you have space in your vehicle to carry it.

I bought the Shade Grabber in a 50% off sale and it's proved a useful addition to my Robens Fairbanks adding plenty of extra porch space and nicely protecting the tent's entrance/porch.

Stability in the wind is OK but I have had to take it down, just in case, in 'medium' winds despite these hardly ruffling the tent. I think it would be marginally better if attached to one of the intended tents from e.G. The Dreamer range.

The version pictured just has a single (but substantial) alloy pole at the front. I think some versions had an additional pole at the back. For this reason (just one pole) plus the high full price cost, I've awarded it 8/10. I use a pad from a rolled-up T-shirt to spread the load around the single pole and will replace this with a dense foam pad next time.

I use additional guy lines, some shock-corded, to increase stability, and oversized tent pegs to prevent them from working loose. Before my next outing, I plan to reinforce the fabric area that stretches over the top point of the Fairbanks with a double layer of heavy-duty ripstop nylon.

I can recommend the Shade Grabber whether you own one of the tents it's intended for or you just want a quirky fix for your tent.
