1 Reviews of the Atomatent Cameleon

By: Tricky Tree  Reason: Other  Made in: 2011   Rating:

Atomatent was started in 2007 by Tom van Zanten and Mustafa Abal who had previously spent over 20 years working at De Waard. They make a whole range of tents, tarps, caravan awnings as well as offering a tent repair service. The tents are all made, by them, at their workshop in Uden, Holland. I was fortunate enough to see the Cameleon on a visit to their showroom last year and it has been at the top of my shopping list ever since!

Like all of Atomatents tents the Cameleon is a pyramid style tent. Set up is straightforward but will take a little time. The groundsheet (SIG) is pegged down first, then the poles put in place and then finally the fly is guyed out. The design and shape means that they are incredibly stable even in the worst weather. The Cameleon is one of the smaller tents that they make and is advertised as a 3 berth. It would make an ideal weekender for a couple or longer if you got the extension to go with it. That said, it is plenty big enough for 3 and bags as the sleeping area measures 250cm x 300cm. Head height is 200 cm so the inside feels roomy. To the front there is an enclosed porch so you can sit outside the tent.

As an option you can get the 'vario' - this is the extension that you can see in one of the photos. Extension doesn't do it justice as its more than that. You can adapt it suit the conditions, so it can be closed, the sides can be opened or you can just have the side screens on (as in the showroom photo) so it can suit whatever the weather is doing. Close up, the quality shines through. The tent is made using heavy 320gm KS 202 cotton, heavy duty YKK zips and aluminium poles, together with a heavy duty SIG. As long as its looked after it would last a life time.

In summary then, it's a great tent that would suit a couple (or a couple with small children) for weekends or longer with the vario. Downside? Well you would have to go to Uden to collect it, but look at it this way, it would be a chance to go to a lovely country and meet some very friendly people. And in an age when everything is mass produced in China it is refreshing that you can meet the men who made your tent!

Manufacturer's Description

Available from http://www.atomatent.nl.

The Cameleon is the first tent in the Atomatent range. All the typical features of a Atomatent are represented in the Cameleon. That means a lot of space inside the tent and under the canopy, and of course the continuous walls of the canopy that provide extra protection.

Placing two poles of 160 cm in an A-shape with a pole of 80 cm behind the sleeping area, creates a spacious three-person tent or if you want a small family tent. The deep and wide detachable canopy creates a massive "living" area in the tent.

At the front door with a height of 230 cm creates a spacious entrance. The canopy of the Cameleon drops to a height of 200 cm. This creates a sheltered character and the tent gets its specific styling. Through his camping comfort and convenience, the Cameleon is an excellent 'hiking tent'.
