1 Reviews of the Exped Andromeda

By: Lobright  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2005   Rating:   Date: 07/05/2008

I've owned this tent since Christmas 2005, and have used it regularly - including 14 nights car camping around France.

My good experiences: It is never a chore to put it up. Once the inner is hooked in (after the first time you use it), I've found it goes up a doddle. One person can just about put it up, although three hands are probably more useful! The vestiblue is big, although the claim about 'fitting a bike in', is perhaps only true for kiddies bikes - my full size mountain bike I left with the front wheel sticking out the fly sheet. The sleeping accommodation is big too, with good ventilation. The little bags for stowing the guy ropes are a useful addition.

My not-so-good experiences: If it's raining, the water tends to run off into the vestibule area, creating puddles that easily get walked into the sleeping area. This is also true for any build-up of condensation on the inside. Also, two of the glow-in-the-dark tags on the zips have pulled off - the only build quality gripes we've had with it.

I would recommend this tent to anyone who's considering car camping, as the storage size is tiny for a tent of this volume. Unfortunately I can't comment on its suitability for walking as I've not tried it (yet!).

Finally, if you're considering buying one of these tents, I'd look to get the 'footprint' groundsheet that is hooked underneath the entire tent footprint - it gives a groundsheet in the vestibule, and protection under the sleeping section.

Manufacturer's Description

Huge vestibule - large enough to hide a bicycle! A multitude of loops allows a line to be strung inside Andromeda, and two people can sit comfortably in the dry vestibule in the event of bad weather.
Easy setup with Exped?s unique flat sleeves. Poles slide easily from outside the fly and seat into convenient, adjustable pockets. And to make it even easier, the inner canopy comes pre-attached. With 4 stakes, setup is complete in just a few minutes!
For ventilation and views, windows can be opened completely from inside and are reinforced with mosquito netting to stop the bugs. The venting also helps minimize condensation in rain. Window supports keep ports open at all times and conceal small sections of pole repair tube.
Seamless bathtub floor design assures waterproof performance. In fact, even the corner seams are taped! Fabric resists a water column rating of 14+ PSI (10,000 mm).
Easy handling, day or night: Zippers have color coded, reflective, and glow-in-the-dark pulls that operate easily with one hand.
Storm proof: Flat pole sleeve technology makes the tent more aerodynamic and strengthens the pole sleeve seams. For bad weather conditions, Andromeda includes numerous loops and premounted guy lines, stored in Cord Stuffsacks. Double guy line loops grip the pole sleeves to prevent flapping of the fly in windy weather.
Canopy can be used alone, simply by detaching its ring and toggle system. Re-attaches easily, too.
