1 Reviews of the Golite Shangri-La 5

By: Valbarley  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2010   Rating:

Excellent lightweight huge tent for backpacking

I don't like the coffin like shelters normally associated with lightweight walking so this was perfect. Did debate whether to get the yellow (bamboo) option but thought the bugs would love it so went with more traditional green

I bought the additional nest and groundsheet as wasn't sure which would work best. I took all 3 items in the rucksack, but could have quite easily used just the fly and nest in colder weather - alternating for the groundsheet and fly in the warmer months (the fly can be used on its own, as can the nest, but highly unlikely in this country!)

Material is very thin but is sold as a 4 season tent so sure it is up the job in more extreme weather (google pics of it and you will see it set up in the snow)

Very quick to pitch being a single centre pole - there are adjusters to lengthen the pole to raise it as high as possible (you can stand in the centre) but I found on the highest notch that the floor starts to raise too high and leaves a gap which I'd rather avoid (lost it's one point for that!)

Works well in wet weather with just the nest, as it is angled it gives you room in the entrance to cook in the dry

It comes with some lightweight titanium pegs. I bought some lightweight guy rope and cam cleats as although it has loops for guys, they are not supplied. I also purchased additional pegs to account for the guys and extra pegging points around the bottom edge

Packs up and dries very quickly and easily

Although initial outlay can be a bit hefty (package for fly and nest is £300), it holds it value well on the second hand market

Can't fault it! Very pleased
