7 Reviews of the Zanzibar 600

By: Chuckv  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2008   Rating:

Bought this used last year (but looks brand new)

Used for first time early may bank holiday weekend. On the Saturday the rain and wind were the worst I have experienced in over 10 years of camping. Not one drop of water got in and stayed rock solid (thanks to the steel poles). Takes a lot of keeping warm because of the size but other than that its perfect. Me and the wife put it up first time in just over an hour, should get this down to about 45 mins with practice.

We decided to downsize from our Cabanon Espace as the bags were just to bulky, after almost buying the Wolflake 7, wanted polycotton, we spotted a brand new old stock Zanzibar & I'm so glad we did. Saved ourselves 500 pounds & have a fab tent. This is a lovely tent, spacious, easy to erect, packs ize although big, a lot smaller than were used to.

Fits nicely on standard pitches, good size pods. I noticed on a previous review the groundsheet not being attached at doors was classed as a negative, personally I think this is a good thing as you can sweep any bits straight outside. Overall a great tent for the 400 pounds we paid.

I purchased this tent from a local camping store in july. It was a choice between this tent an the Outwell Bearlake 6, as I wanted polycotton.

I eventually decided on the Vango as the price was more in my range.

I have just got back from a week camping trip in Devon which was fantastic apart from the weather but the tent stood up to all that nature threw at it. High wind and heavy rain. Inside the tent was Dry as a bone and stood solid as a rock in the wind whilst tents either side of us were taking a battering. There is plenty of room inside the main compartment and the bedrooms.

The ventilation is fantastic, and the huge windows let a lot of light in.

The only downside I found was one of the elastic pegging points came off whilst pitching and the tent is very heavy to pitch. But other than that I was very happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend this tent to anyone from Novice to pro

Bought this as a replacement for an old canvas frame tent

Pros: roomy, light, airy, bedrooms ok with double airbed

Withstood high winds & rain but used delta pegs

Cons: side door canopies too low many head bangs, 1 pegging point came away on 1st peg, tent very heavy to erect, pinning the opposite legs are a nightmare, v pegs supplied bent & this was in grass, front half side wall with main pegging point caught wind & was very noisy - bad design

Ok, All of the above plus more.

We purchased this tent at the end of the season last year because we were going touring Spain and Portugal. We lived in this tent for six weeks, it was erected around 22 times during that period, we suffered the worst storm Portugal had seen in 18 years in Luz and the camp site was flooded around us, our tent was perfectly dry inside. We later pitched right on the wind in Quincho, we didn't realise it was wind suffers paradise and were exposed to the most awful wind storm! The tent stayed up & dry, throughout the trip, we were fortunate enough to enjoy the space and because this is a fabric tent it was much cooler even in the Algarve! I agree though the carpet is not great!

We are looking forward to many more camping trips in ours and would particularly recommend this tent to families. The luxury of the cotton is fab!

Having read the other review here as well as looking at various other websites we decided that the Zanzibar best suited our needs. We have just been away in it for the first time and were not disappointed. The most difficult part of pitching it is putting the poles in but once this is done it is very straightforward for two people. Once up it is very spacious and has plenty of room for our three small children to play in. Canopy provides a useful extra space for sitting/eating/cooking under. Great to have three separate bedrooms and this, along with the spacious living area, was one of the main reasons for choosing it. Fabric is very quick drying and, even though weather was not good, the noise from the wind and rain was not as bad as in other tents we have used. Overall, very impressed and looking forward to our next trip.

The best way I can sum up this tent would be to list the pros and cons, so here goes.

*A fantastically easy and quick tent to pitch (needs 2 people though)The poles are all the same size and slide into the sleeves with great ease, no pushing and shoving. Roof poles in, side poles on, peg out the back, lift up, walk forward and peg out the front. Then just attatch clips and guy out. Put up the inners, which you can put in 1,2 or all 3. Put on canopy if required.

* Fab new guy line toggle - Twist them to slide up and down and then twist back to lock securely.

*Light and airy, with 4 full size windows, which all have covers which roll down into individual pockets.The bedroom inners are in a light green cotton, which have a relaxed feel and make it a little dimmer for a good nights sleep.

*Well ventilated, no condensation issues, as each side window has air vents at the top. Around the skirt there are several vents which are beneath the outer storm flaps so no unwanted draughts.

*Very roomy living area.

*Good airflow in the summer. Zip off front door, and both side doors open fully or with no see-um mesh for fab through breeze.

* Canopy a good size.

* Solid as a rock, great steel pole structure and plenty of guy lines.

* Quieter than polyester tents in the rain and wind.

* Much cooler than polyester tents, which was great for me, a real benefit !

* Having 3 bedrooms is great, the middle one being slightly bigger, although the floor size is the same the end two have sloping sides.

* 2 EHU entry points, 1 on either side.

* High quality groundsheet.

* Ease of taking it down. Done in 20 minutes.

* Very large and heavy pack size (although good sized trolley bag provided) 2 packs, poles and tent.

* Not fully sewn in, as it can be dropped down at all 3 doors. The outer storm flap can be tucked under though.

* The guy lines at the front hindered what could be positioned under the canopy.

* The carpet you can buy for it is of terrible quality, it bobbles and pulls and we won't be using ours again. Not easy to keep clean.

We absolutely love this tent and hope it sees us through a good few years. Fab !
