2 Reviews of the Opera

I bought this last year direct from Germany for 299.00 in the autumn sale.

We looked at an Opera 4p being used by a German couple with 2 small children, camping in the UK last summer and were impressed at its compactness, yet it has a good head-room and plenty of room in the bedroom.

It's probably a bit tight for 4 adults but okay for 3 and spacious for 2. It's also got a relatively small pack size and weight for a (small) 'family' tent so doesn't take up too much space in the car.

Erecting it for the first time I was impressed by the quality. However I owned a Vaude Base-camp years ago which lasted for years in great condition and I always regretted selling it.They are very well made tents.

The good thing about this tent is that it's very quick and easy to erect and the inner can be left inside when packed away. The tent is very stable and solid due to the over-size aluminium poles. There is no annoying 'loose' fabric when pitched.

We have bought the comfort ground sheet which attaches via toggles, which is a bit of a faff, but fine once done. Another advantage of getting the ground sheet is that you can un-clip the front of the bedroom pod in the day to provide more living room in the main tent, with a proper ground sheet under foot. I've uploaded a few photos showing it erected with the comfort ground sheet in.

This is a stand-up height tunnel tent (180cm, so may not suit those over 6ft tall) built of the same quality of materials that Vaude use for their mountain tents, with alloy poles and tough ripstop fabric with a HH of 4000mm. This model was designed really for groups doing outdoor activities who wanted a larger, shared camping space.

It is compact (8kg) and very easy to put up with just 3 main poles and a small one for the rainhood over the front. The quality of materials is superb. Ventilation is very good so there are few problems with condensation. It does not have clear windows; rather, it has two large mesh windows, that are closeable from the inside. The bedroom is lower in height (140cm height) and I think one would struggle to really fit 4 people in there as the back corners are quite steeply 'mitred'; we have enough room for our double airbed, leaving space down either side for bags and personal effects. There is enough space in the living area (which is about 2mx 2m) for 2 chairs, coolbox, storage box and cooker. It pitches as one, though we have sometimes needed to separate the groundsheet and bedroom for cleaning purposes when we are packing away. This problem has been solved by adding a separate groundsheet that fits the full footprint of the tent. Given that the stuffsack is quite oversized, packing away is never a struggle and there is room for storing extras (like our additional GS and ground anchors) in there, so that everything is together.

It may not be an ideal tent for families; the lack of windows and the draughtiness of being non SIG may not appeal to some. However, it is ideal for us as a weekend break tent for two, for any time of year, as the quality of materials means that it can withstand wind and rain.
