Best investment ever made, When we started camping it didnt take long to sus out that leisure tents were not worth their money, I think we bought an Outwell, after three weeks touring and putting it up and down around eight times it started to show wear.
We then invested in a Vango Equinox TBS tent which is now probably 17 years old and we still have it and it has seen some horrendous conditions. Once children came along we then invested in the big Vango Equinox that had six births, these versions were the no frills green no window type and can stand up to pretty much anything, both well worth their money. Unfortunately within a short period of time the family grew from from a dog to five children as well. The big equinox was just too small for all of us, so we took two tents. Last year though we took the plunge and bought a Marmot Lair, quite expensive and had to specially order (took six months to come), but worth every penny. It is really meant as a base tent, so you don't get bedrooms, just one big room. We get all seven beds in and there is plenty of room for rucksacks etc as well. It has two massive porches, for us one for the dog and one for cooking stuff, food etc.
The quality is out on its own, at first a little hard to pitch but once you have put it up and down a few times gets easy. I can put it up now in 5-10 mins.
I am sure this tent is not everyones cup of tea but if you are a fairly hardy camper that wants a lightweight simple to erect tent that really does do what it says on the tin you cant beat this one and even better, rarer than hens teeth. I haven't seen the £5,000 TNF base tent but would suggest that you are not paying £3000 for the name with the Marmot.

The Lair is a monster dome tent that holds up to Himalayan weather. While meant for expedition base camps, families appreciate it for a foul weather living space during mountain vacations.
