3 Reviews of the Snugpak Ionosphere

Further update:

By the judicial use of shockcord on the peg out points, fewer stakes are needed to peg the tent out neatly.

Also, threading some paracord through the rod sleeves, with eyes or loops in each end; the fly can be tied off to these and then the whole tent can be pitched in one.Or still set up without the fly if wished. (the cord is left in situ)

I've now used it in a thunderstorm and all was perfectly dry. Condensation in the morning was minimal if present at all. Very pleased with the Ionosphere, as a stealth/wild camping shelter. I believe that it will also be good at shedding stronger winds too.

To make the pack even smaller, the poles (DAC) can be packed separately in a backpack.

The Snugpak Ionosphere.Unboxing.

Is the Ionoshere a 1 man tent.Or a bivvi?

I think of it as a glorified bivvi.

Love the Stratosphere, but can't get on with the condensation. So in a similar vein, (light, small, discreet and hopefully effective?) and at a remarkable price from Outdoors GB (£117), I ordered one (the Ionosphere) and have just unboxed it and had an initial set up; which is always more of a faff than subsequent pitching? The Jack Wolfskin Gossamer was another consideration?

So , firstly, there's 16.Yes 16 pegs, including what Snugpak refer to as 2 spares. Why? Some manufacturers have the gall not to supply even the basic need for their tents! Are they poor quality? Seem good standard S/pak cross shaped pegs, and yet.If you use ALL the peg out points. You need two more! Obviously some points are designed to double up on the pegs, yet the tent/bivvi, didn't seem to set so well doing that, and I do like shelters pegged out taught and flat/smooth? But it CAN be set well.

I don't as a rule like inner set first shelters and this is the case here. Whilst it is nice ( excellent!) to be able to use it just as a mozzy proof shelter, it can't be beyond the wit of man to design it so you have the option on set up?

Much has been said in videos about the floor space inside: ie, it is long and surprisingly wide? I am 6'4' and 105 kgs, and it suits me fine, the inner mesh is kept way off my face. But whether my pack could (comfortably) come in above or below me, I very much doubt. I'll find out soon, lol! You will need to be under 6' for that I feel. There is loads of room for the smaller paraphanalia though? For a 1 man stealth shelter/tent/bivvi, whatever, it is surprisingly roomy for most people.

Entrance and exit is a doddle, I can even spin around inside.Just.And I'm an old git!

Quality of manufacture seems good, and it has a high hydrostatic head (5000mm). The inner mesh is reassuring fine, 'noseeum' as they call it. It has a reputation for dealing well with high winds too.

I think this is getting closer to stealth/lightweight camping Nirvana for me. But maybe not QUITE there yet?

We'll know better when it's used in anger.

I have deducted a star for the fact it is inner erected first only, and excessive peg out points.

Manufacturer's Description

The Snugpak® Ionosphere™ is an extremely small, compact one-person tent. With a two-pole, easy to pitch design, the tent forms a hooped shelter that keeps condensation build-up to a minimum. The inner tent is made of a No-See-Um Mesh Mosquito Net to not only keep out bugs, snakes, etc. but it can also be used without the fly as a stand-alone mosquito shelter/barrier in the summer months and warmer climates.

The Ionosphere™ will shelter you from all but the worst inclement weather, with a 5000mm hydrostatic head (HH) polyurethane (PU) coated fly sheet, with taped seams. The Ionosphere™ has an impressive floor space, measuring 240cm/94” long and 90cm/35” wide, creating ample room for a single person with some equipment. In an emergency, the Ionosphere™ can accommodate two people.

The low profile Ionosphere™ tent packs down small with a light trail weight of 1200g / 42oz. Using tried and tested lightweight DAC® aluminium poles, it does not take up valuable space in your pack. The Ionosphere™ is ideal to use when light weight and small pack size are essential.

A tried and tested favourite of Hill and Moorland Leaders, Mountain Leaders and Military Personnel where more robust protection from the weather elements is required.
