Since the beginning of September, I've camped in Cornwall (twice), Norfolk and Cumbria.
That has given me an idea for a self-imposed challenge which will serve as an impetus to go camping even more frequently than usual.
In the year from 1 September 2010 to 31 August 2011 I will try to camp (by which I mean spend at least one night in my tent) in each of the 40-odd historic counties of England (counting Yorkshire's Ridings and Cumbria each as a single county but excluding the metropolitan counties and City of London). Campsites and rough camping will count but not 'garden camping'.
There's no prize of course and I'm not looking for pats on the back - my reward will be nights under canvas in new places.
Because I'm not keen on camping much later than November or earlier than mid-March I've only got about seven months left to do them all. So far it's three down, thirty-seven to go - I'd better get weaving!
Anyone here on UKCS done anything similar? Any advice?
That sounds like a great challenge - I only wish I was able to do the same bat am tied because of my fostering.
Please, please keep a blog - I thoroughly enjoyed reading of your adventures at Breck Farm and would love to hear more - could be the start of a great book - 'Camping around the Counties'
Good luck and keep us posted - a great site to visit in Suffolk would be the Orchard
------------- Anne - mad mum to one - foster mum to many - adoptatent to you guys!
I haven't included Cumbria. I intend to divide it into Cumberland and Westmoreland (giving me a perfect excuse to go back to the area). By that reckoning I haven't been there because Grange Over Sands was in the exclave of Lancashire. So no (done) for Cumbria until I've visited its two constituents and, separately, Lancs.
Given how huge and varied and beautiful Yorkshire is, I'll include its four constituents – east, west, south and north.
I'll exclude all those made-up 1974 "counties" like Greater London, West Midlands, Bristol (ex-Avon), Tyne and Wear, Greater Manchester and Merseyside.

Why exclude London? This is a nice site and has a nice field for tents.
Good luck with that, and no shirking there please, merseyside is a county too, despite what the cheshire set might like, and we'll feel left out if you don't stop here!
erroutdoors, I reckon London will be covered by pre-LCC Middlesex, Kent and Surrey. Besides, I've spent a lot of time in London (although not camping).
bigtoe, I might well visit the Merseyside area - the Wirral, say - but I'm not including it as a county.
valbarley, good idea - I'll check it out.
Korrado, yup, Devon is certainly on my list.
oldham, how could anyone forget Bristol? It may not be on my list but Gloucestershire and Somerset definitely are.
