Had to go to Discover Darlington this morning, just outside the service bays was a burnt out wreck that yesterday was someone's pride and joy until an as yet, unknown electrical fault started a fire in the caravan which was still hitched as the owner was at the service reception. One of the Discover employees spotted the fire starting and ran over and dragged both gas cylinders out then unhitched the car. We were told the fire only took 5 mins to totally destroy the caravan, I took a pic on my phone, there's only the chassis left, but don't know how to upload them. 2 of the Discover stock were slightly damaged but it could have been much worse. The after sales manager said a PIR check would have prevented it maybe.

I thought the PIR check was mains only, not the 12V system which must have been at fault as there would have been no mains hooked up to the van.

Oh no, the owners must be devestated, but it could have been worse. Well done to the fast acting employer.

The After Sales Manager appeared to be making a "Get out of Jail!" statement.
Like RodderStrotter says I thought a PIR Test is for mains electricity and the caravan wasn't connected to the mains.

A 12v supply is still an electrical supply and should have been checked as it is an inherent part of the overall caravan wiring.

What about the fuses protcting the circuits? unless it was the 12v power cable shorting to earth somewhere.

Im not so sure, I would cover 12V if I was doing a PIR, at least a visual inspection, cant find my inspection and testing book right now, but I do know the the 12V system is included in the BS7671 wiring regs (was reading that bit last night).
Any sparks with the testing book to hand??
