A site with character within minutes of a very nice seaside town plenty of shops and restaurants within a few minutes walk (including on site) All facilities close at hand to all pitches and kept very very clean. Around ten minutes to station for trains (every 30mins) to Cinque Terre Villages. A day ticket to Cinque Terre including rail travel is 16Eur, best to go to furthest and work back Easy to see all five in one day train journey around 15mins between each.
The downsides are this is a very popular tourist area for Americans Chinese etc long queues at the station so arrive early at Cinque Terre desk at station to buy tickets.
The site itself is really nice but pitches are small and entrance is tight not really suitable for caravans over 6m though there were longer motorhomes. The approach from the autostrade is downhill on a windy road but not particularily difficult and involves driving through the town. Pitches are terraced, staff will assist if required. Suggest for anyone in doubt you use google earth to view route through town and into site. Last but not least expensive (~43 Eur)but we felt it was worth it for a pleasant convenient site.
We were tired and irratable when we pulled into this campsite - it had been a long drive from Lake Garda. Our first impression was that both campsite and town were a bit of a dump - how wrong we were!
The town was a little gem, the surrounding area was breathtaking, and the site was kind of cute - my wife described it as Captain Correlian! We extended our stay on two occasions.
Our motorhome pitch was cramped against a wall with not a blade of grass in sight, but there were other brits nearby and everyone was very friendly. The church bells were loud but very atmospheric!
The shower block is very good, and the restaurant also looked nice, but the site is a bit expensive (€26/night without hook-up). The wi-fi is also expensive, and it's easier to buy a few drinks at the swimming pool bar in town, and use their free connection. The site is very well placed - it's a short walk to the beach or into town.
Don't fail to visit the Cinque Terre villages on the coastline - they are truly outstanding. You can catch a boat from the pier but it's easier and much cheaper to take the train.
Levanto is a very friendly town, and we seemed to discover another pretty little section each day. There's also a nice bike ride through the old railway tunnel to the ajoining village.
All in all, it beats Lake Garda and Como hands down! Would definitely visit again.
Great location, a pedestrian-friendly 200-300m walk through a lovely part of town to the beach, less to a mini-supermarket past a lovely loggia. We didn't use the car all week which was a treat (actually I used it once to go to the bigger supermarket on the edge of town).
Easy access to the Cinque Terre villages by train or boat (or by foot, but it was a bit hot for that!). No other Brits here: 40% Italian, 30% Dutch, 10% German, 10% Danish.
Very good (and popular) on site restaurant, highly regarded by Italians especially for pizza. A basic playground. State-of-the-art washing and toilet facilities - very very nice (toilet paper included!), better than at a 4 star site we stayed at later.
The pitches were on the small side, but this seems normal in Italy - but the site were helpful and gave us a camper pitch for our 5m x 5m tent, which was slightly larger than a tent pitch. There was some limited shade; we were glad to have a tarp to keep the sun off at siesta time.
The area around the site was noisy when we were there. There are 2 over-active bell towers near by which competed with sleepless dogs and early-rising guys strimmering weeds in the neighbouring vinyard. There was also a hotel being constructed on the otherside of the vinyard, which actually made very little noise - perhaps they do most of the work in the winter.
Levanto is a great town, tourist-friendly but not over-developed. Some great restaurants (try the 3 Cantinas - best meal we had in 3 weeks in Italy), foccacieras and gelaterias. Also a lovely garden and piazzas.
The main beach did have a bit of a sewage problem when the wind was onshore; we preferred the small rocky cove on the way to Bonassola - great for rock pooling and snorkelling. The walk to Bonassola itself is recommended - 30 mins level walking and much of it through disused rail tunnels (welcome shade in the afternoon) which have been converted to walking/cycling paths with a lovely cliff top cafe bar at the end.
