Help! I can't get insurance for my converted campervan. I bought it two years ago for £23,000. It is my only vehicle, not used for business and I have to keep it on the road as I live in a flat in the city centre. I haven't made any claims.

It has been insured for the past two years with Aviva, who were the only insurance company that would cover me but now they have changed their policy and will no longer offer cover, primarily it seems, as it's my only vehicle.

The insurance lapsed yesterday so I'm stranded.

Has anyone else had this problem and resolved it? I'd be very grateful for any advice.

We've had a campervan as our only vehicle for over 15 years and never had a problem insuring it.

Have you tried specialist Motorhome insurers such as Comfort? Or if you are a member of the CC or the C&CC try them. We are members of the C&CC and currently insure via them as they offered us the best price this year.

Have you tried Adrian Flux? They are often ok for difficult to insure vehicles/drivers. It may help if you find some off street parking with better security away from city centre.

We have a campervan as our only vehicle and insure it,
inclusive of breakdown cover both home and abroad, with Camping and Caravanning Club. They were quite competitive pricewise and we have had no problems with them. We previously insured our car through them as well as our folding camper.

We have had problems with 'van and car insurance, and in both cases were dumped and left without insurance.
For the van we use Saga, though I suppose you have to be 50+. We had some problems with them too, mind you. You need to be very clear about your vehicle and what cover you require, and get it sorted in good time, in writing.

Thanks for all your helpful replies.

I have tried some of these companies with no luck and will try the others today but the problem seems to be that it is a conversion rather than a manufactured campervan.

The fact that it is converted, my only vehicle (even though I do less than 6000 miles a year) and kept on the road seems to have ruled me out of any insurer willing to cover me.

Has van had classification changed from van to campervan? If not you could probably insure it as a normal commercial van. What is the conversion like, is it a proper, professional conversion, cooker, sink, all built in or is it just a few home made plywood bits & pieces inside? If home made it might not classify as a campervan anyway.

If van has been converted by a van converter whose business is building campervan conversions then I would have thought this would be a properly built campervan for insurance purposes if you provided name of conversion company.

Try "Shield", they offered cover prior to , during and of course following conversion. It does help if you get registered as a Motor Caravan rather than a light goods vehicle. Good luck

Hi Colleen - I've just purchased a campervan conversion (VW T4). I was given a wee leaflet from the place that did the conversion for Safeguard. So I just phoned them up and got insurance for £315 fully comp with AA cover. I didn't make a point of telling them it would be my "car" also - just agreed it would only be for social and domestic use. It's kept in my driveway and has an immobiliser.

They're doing 12 months for the price of 10. Their number is 0800 466 1919 or you can find the online at www.safeguarduk.co.uk. They were really nice and helpful, so give them a try.x

Thanks very much to everyone for your help.

I have now managed to get insurance. Safeguard wouldn't insure me but referred me to Scenic who were happy to cover me.

What a relief!

Another good company for unusual veichles in NFU, not only do they cover agricultural veichles, they do cover camper vans and self build conversions as well. We have insured tractors with them in the past, and always got a good deal and good service.

Why wouldn't Safeguard insure you?
