If you Google for Epson xp520 printer problems you should find lots of help including drivers to download from Epson and a video showing how to clear the print head.
Try troubleshooting the driver first, as suggested.
If that doesn’t work, if it’s like my HP, the bracket with the ink cartridges lifts out (you take them out first) with a lever action. I rinse it in warm water until it runs clear & shake it in a paper towel to dry it, but it needs to be properly dry before it goes back into the printer; lever clicks back down.
However, over time, I find the electric connections get inky and the print message doesn’t get through. So while the cartridge bracket is out, I very very gently wipe the metal dot things (on the back wall of the printer, you only see them when the cartridge cassette is out) with a facial cleansing wipe or damp kitchen paper, wiping in one direction only. It’s amazing how much ink comes off.
It frustrates me that it’s cheaper to buy a new printer than a set of inks. When this one eventually packs in (10+ years old), I’ll get one with refillable ink tanks rather than cartridges.
Have you tried unplugging the printer and deleting it. Then plug it back in and add printer. Windows should search and find the latest driver for it. I don't normally use windows 10, but my new laptop came with it installed. It picked up my printer and installed it OK.
If you're plagued by Windows 10 updates, you can use Regedit to turn them off. In Win 10 Pro, you can stop them using the 'Group policies' settings.

Thanks, but I also think that I need to install Epson scanner 2 (uninstall scanner 1 first?) so will try that tomorrow. Have already tried what you suggest.
After problems with my Epsom and the ever increasing cost of inks I bought an HP printer
and subscribe to Instank ink.The printer was around £45, maybe more now and the ink costs me £1.99 a month. I never run out of ink as HP make sure I receive new cartridges when one is due to run out.For £1.99 I can print up to 50 pages a month, £0.99 per month allows up to 15 pages. There are other plans.Best thing I ever did.
Epson 6100. Don't need to use it much, but now need to get my head around photo printing. Bought the paper and then realised that I don't know how to do it.
Should be intuitive. The print command will give you the option of doing photos rather than documents & then what size paper you’re using. The only “trick” is loading the paper the right way up - or down. So do one first. I think it’s shiny photo side up in the specific part of the tray…
I believe you can print direct from your phone with an "app" called Epson Connect. Never used this myself as I always download to my laptop and "tweak" most photos before printing, but this looks like a direct phone to printer route.
