went to go outdoors yesterday and bought extra pegs for our new tent thats coming today.
can anyone help us in telling us which type of tent pegs are for what grounds/conditions?
we bought 24 rock pegs because they look strong and sturdy compared to the pegs that came with our last tent which bent if they hit anything hard as they were being hammered in.
we saw V - shaped pegs, long and medium lengths, also plastic pegs etc - we ve no idea really what pegs are for what!
The rock pegs you bought you seem to have understood the use of , and frankly they will do for a lot of uses as there is often mixed ground with tough bits. The only other ones you might have a peek at for windy conditions , possibly for the main ropes and the ones you have for the skirt around the bottom of the tent .....
they are for a bear lake 6 tent. these delta ground anchors look great - pricey for the number of them that we would need though! - or are they just used for example, the corners of the tent and the guy lines? so in that case we probably just need 16 ( 8 each side of the tent ) of them? eek lol
we also saw pegs that you screw into the ground using a drill - when wud you use these? ( pitching the tent in tescos car park into the tarmac? lol ) - and the drill is Another thing to pack then!
Personally I use rock pegs or the heavier wire ones. Others are V shape in cross section for snow. for general camping I have never needed anything except the first two.
I think the screw in type you mention are mainly used by caravanners putting up their awning, so never used them.
The deltas are really only needed for the main ropes, if you used them for the windward main tension points that would help. The plastic pegs that come with the outwell stuff tend to bend in mixed ground, we found this in a place with grass ..... but rougher underneath.
I did not bother with the screw in for rough ground as I am sure not walking round a campsite with a DeWalt cordless , cant imagine if they are in that hard how much effort would be required to remove them !
I think if you look at the Delta site you will see that in softer soil the thin profile of some metal pegs can be pulled through the soil , turned so the head faces the tent and then allow the rope to slip off. I know the deltas a a little dear but they last and are great. I think when you go to pay your cart on their site you can add a note saying your a member here and get a 10% discount .
What are the plastic Deltas like in hard ground? We were on an all weather pitch & struggled to knock in some of our rock pegs - is it better to shell out for the metal ones to suit any kind of conditions, or would the plastic ones cope with hard ground?
I have to hold my hand up and say that I bought rock npegs for hard ground because I did not want to damage the plastic( resin )deltas.
Did think about a few metal deltas for the main corners of the windward but having just bought the bike carrier etc etc etc I think we will live with the rocks in hard ground. I dont think the threat of a peg pulling through and turning from the 45degree away lean to a towards lean is as likely in the sort of ground I would not use the plastic deltas in .
Hi, we use the plastic Delta pegs on normal or soft ground on the main guy lines. We have bought and use the metal Deltas for hard ground you still require rock pegs with the metal Deltas by the way. We have built up quite a collection of pegs over the years so can usually find the right one for differing ground conditions. We also carry small flat head plastic and/or metal pegs for the footprint.

Take a claw hammer with you, if you are using the rock/hard ground pegs. Thay are a s#d to extract from the ground, rather than a peg puller.
Hard ground pegs, are like steel pegs, which can be driven into the ground. Rock pegs are designed specifically, when they hit a stone/rock, it will turn as the peg goes in.
I use both types of pegs.
If using plastic pegs. These are only suitable for ground which has some give. Absolutly useless in hard ground.
The only reason why pegs turn, especially the wire pegs, that the guyropes slip off. They have not been driven right into the ground. They are for normal ground conditions.
The reason why the wire pegs pulle out; Too thin for ground conditions (wrong pegs)very soft, sandy conditions. The width of the pegs, need to be wide.
I hope this will help you.
