We're having to replace our well loved Coleman Weathermaster, after an accident befell it! We've been struggling to find a tent that has all our requirements. We're rather taken with the Outwell Shasta Lake but are wondering about the dis/advantages of polycotton. One website we looked at said they couldn't guarantee it being 100% waterproof. We only camp in the UK - mainly Scotland, so keeping dry is important. Any views?

hi don't know anything about either tent, just wanted to welcome you to ukcs. I did wonder though, if the weather master fitted all your requirements , can't you get another?
Any tent you buy should be waterproof otherwise it isn't fit for purpose.
I'd avoid this website if I were you. The Outwell Lakes are fantastic tents and I would recommend any make of polycotton over nylon. Sounds like they don't want the hassle of any returns. There are plenty of proper resellers that will look after you. The water just runs off our Norfolk Lake - not as much as a drip - and I would trust it in any UK weather.
The only thing to consider with polycotton is the extra size and weight when it is packed compared to Nylon. If you can live with it then it is well worth the extra money.

I don't think many tents can promise to be 100% waterproof. We hope and find that most of them are, most of the time but a 100% guarentee is a big ask.
Could it have been refering to the acceptable weathering in or possible seam sealing that might be needed?
Anyone know of any smallish two/three person polycotton tents? There's the Coleman Nevada, http://www.goodyears.co.uk/productDetails.php?id=18 but that really is quite tiny and is a sleeping dome only for one/two people. Anything one or two sizes up from that? MT

Ours is a 4 if that's any use to you? Coleman Columbus 4. In polycotton. Smaller than a lot of tents but not small if you know what I mean.

We looked at the Outwell Baltic Sea M Tunnel Tent - 2008 Model at Frensham. They also make the North Sea. I thought they were really super. Perfect size for us - just 2 adults who tour with just a car. The Outdoor megastore have got them on their website.

Were all a little confused on here
Polycotton is a good new material for tents and many other outdoor items, The only way it could leak is if it as been made with a defect or damaged, and I would say it is superior to the 100% man made materials for tents. It is still not known what life span it will have as it is effected by UV but it as been stated that it will have double the life of the nylon tent, be more stable and you should not experience condensation

Thanks to you all for super advice, and so quick! I'm really impressed with this site. That's it the decision is made - we're off to purchase the Shaska Lake.
By the way we couldn't get another Weathermaster - they no longer make the model we had.
Thanks all for those suggestions re smaller polycotton tents. When I was looking up the Outwell ones I noticed their South Sea domes. Anyone seen one up or know if they are a new model this year? They look a bit pricey so I was wondering if its worth keeping an eye on Ebay for a second hand one. Cheers. MT
