OK - loving the look of Foxholes near Bishops Castle but how easy is the walk from the village (ie can it be done after dark when you have dinner and a bottle of wine inside you)?

We walked down through the fields in the light and back up the road with torches at night. No pavement but there wasn't much traffic at night. Wasn't too bad (no kids though).

Thanks again for the responses/recommendations everyone. I've made up a nice table which I'm going to attempt to work through this summer!

I ticked the first one from my list last weekend. We went with SamandRose's idea of 'Cheddar Bridge'. The site itself was 'spot on'! Clean facilities, friendly staff, good camping pitches.

The walk into Cheddar from the site is along a bike path which runs around the back of the site. Cheddar was very nice with plenty of pubs (the pubs not outstanding though if you're a pub/ale geek like me!)... but certainly plenty to choose from.

I can recommend a visit!

Morris leisure site in Shrewsbury, pub nearby and next to park and ride for town.
Its a nice town, lots of old streets, the abbey and plenty of pubs and restaurants. Nice riverside walk in the quarry park.
Caravan and motorhome club site at Chester Fairoaks is walking distance to Chesire Oaks retail park with buses to Chester or Liverpool, good pub five minutes walk from site.

Thanks for the feedback on the Cheddar Bridge site Nick! We went to our other suggestion of the White Swan near Pickering, it's a nice site although the views are better if you can live without electric hook-up and pitch up in their second field (farther from the pub).

The beer and cider in the pub were good, the food less so.

I forgot to mention the first campsite we ever stayed at, which is a 5-minute walk from Lacock. This is a National Trust-owned village with several pubs in it, although we chose the Red Lion and whilst it's a pleasant pub we weren't impressed with the food.

I'd love to see your table if you can post a link to it!

The Camping and Caravan Club site at Eskdale in the Lake District is a lovely site that caters for tents and not caravans. A short walk to 2 nice pubs in the village. Also the narrow gauge railway runs from Eskdale to Ravenglass and well worth a visit. The next valley is Wastwater which is one of the loveliest in the Lakes.

Hi,
Some great recommendations on this thread.
We used to use Broadmeadows in Ross a lot but at £30 a night (£35 Bank holidays) too much for our budget.
Talybont on Usk is a little gem.
Nice village,three pubs,cafe/shop.
Walks along the canal, right outside the site and a mile and a half to a reservoir.
Huge pitches as well. All grass no hardstandings.
Regards,
Greg
