Just discovered this forum (what a great idea!) and found loads of useful categories of sites - allowing fires, near beach etc - but what we're looking for is campsites with great walks directly from the campsite. We have a campervan and ideally like to get to the site, setup and then not move it again until we leave! We'd ideally like nice walks with nice scenery, rivers / water / forest access if at all possible for the dog and somewhere with a pub we can walk to. We generally like to walk 5 - 15 miles.
Any recommendations?
We live in Oxford and are planning a long weekend in a couple of weeks so are thinking Peak District / New Forest / Forest of Dean which are perhaps fairly obvious options but any other central or south areas would be good as those areas tend to be fairly booked up!

Hi Sarah welcome to the site, there are lots of walks in Derbyshire we like callow top farm at Ashbourne,it is on the tissington trail has lots of walks from the site including a nice 15/ 20min stroll into Ashbourne. There is a pub on site and a doggy walk as well, have a look at the reviews and you will get other opinions as well, good luck.
We are walkers too and are members of another site www.walkingworld.com It costs about £17 a year but you just enter the post code of the site you're staying at and you get a whole list of walks in the vicinity. You can then print them and the relevant OS maps off. We reckon it saves us money on buying walking guides and maps when we get to our destination.
I've just tried to log on to to Walkingworld but the site is currently down for maintenance but should hopefully be back soon!
I've just come back from Shallow Grange Farm in the Peak District. The owner of the farm gave us a map of a 11 mile walk which we did some of - there were also many other footpaths around which we didn't try. The pub was about a mile and a half away and was also great

C&CC Bakewell site (actually in Youlgreave), loads of walks from the site. Another vote for Hayfield and Shallow Grange - all sites with walking directly from the site. That's something that we look for as we don't like to use the van once we arrive on site. Conkers C&CC site also has lots of walking - perhaps not as scenic as the Peak District, but loads of footpaths and cycle routes.
Stayed at Hayfield too, it's actually a Camping & Caravanning Club site, but I think they allow non-members. Although, as a non-member you pay extra, so it may be worth joining (about £38 per year) if you are planning to go a few times. Walking around there is marvellous, have tramped many a mile around there.
Another site in that area is Losehill, that is a Caravan Club site, not sure if that accepts non-members, but the same applies, if you go a few times, it would be cheaper to join. Walked absolutely miles all around there too, one to Ladybower reservoir, also Mam Tor is near there, walked to Edale from there (start of the Pennine Way) to name a few.
It's within walking distance of Castleton, which has quite a few pubs.
A bit further north, in Yorkshire, is Hawes. Another Caravan Club site, in a marvellous position. We once stayed there for 8 nights, when we had a car + caravan. The car never moved from the day we arrived until the day we left. All we did was walk miles each day, I don't think there is a hill around there we haven't been on. From Hawes to Thwaite via Buttertubs pass, and back via the Pennine Way over Great Shunner fell is a walk we've done 3 times now. And each time, when we've got to Great Shunner Fell, the cloudbase has been very low, so never had a view from there, which we are led to believe is great. Maybe one day we'll see it!! Also, Hawes is within walking distance with quite a few pubs. We've stayed on that site twice over Xmas, it was great.
I 2nd fforest fields the amount of walking in the area is fab and most of it direct from the site . there are even little maps with the walks from the site available from reception and the site owners will be able to direct you to more in the area

Wow thanks for all your suggestions and ideas. I will look at all of them, pick one I can get into this month and will certainly file them all on my list of possible sites for the future! Thanks so much
