Can anyone recommend a good campsite / CL or CS - we belong to CMC and CCC but wondering about Emissions Zone .... don't fancy extra charge. As we are in our motorhome, we would like to park up and be able to commute into central London reasonably. i.e near to railway station/tube. Travelling down A1 .... or if we swing off a Black Cat roundabout the M1

I would recommend Hertford C&CC site. Lovely site and two train routes into London. Despite the fact that Hertford site is 10 minutes up the road from us, we have stayed there a few times with the local DA. The site is surrounded by open countryside, yet is just a stones throw-from the county town. Not that far off the A1 either.

We used to stay at Abbey Wood when we took the van to London, but I think that's in the LEZ now.

Just answered a similar question on another forum.

We've stayed at the Chertsey C&CC site, it's a pleasant site and easy to get to but not too convenient for public transport.

Have you checked your vehicles eligibility to pay the LEZ charge, you can check at TfL LEZ Vehicle Checker

If you are coming down the A1, CAMC Commons Wood site at Welwyn Garden City would be quite convenient, just outside M25 and the start of NUMEROUS zones that you could easily fall foul of, first zone starts just inside M25 and is £100/day for non complying vehicles! Info here https://www.gov.uk/low-emission-zones

Commons Wood is a popular site for visitors to London with rail link into London from nearby town. https://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=3141

The nearby town (walking distance if reasonably fit/or cab ride) offers pubs, restaurants, takeaways and shops etc. There's a big Tesco not far away as well (drive or cab/not really walking distance). The site itself is pleasant enough (I store my van there so know it quite well) with all that you need.

I am not sure if you are asking for this time of year? If not Gullivers in Milton Keynes has a campsite and there are very regular trains into Euston from CMK station. Also very reasonably priced private hire cars for getting to and from the station.

We are approaching London from the opposite direction (Gatwick area) and we go to the C&CC Walton on Thames site. Bit of a long walk to the rail station, but it is possible to travel by bus to Kingston, then another to Putney. All for free of course on our passes. Takes a while but just for a visit to London museums that is ample.

We used CMC site at Wyatts Covert often - the 9.49 a.m bus from the site or a downhill walk to Denham overground station in a morning, but you might tempted to take a minicab from the station back up the hill at the end of the day

why bother trying to find a site in London, or just on the outskirts? there are plenty of towns around london that are less than 30 mins by train into central london
i would start by drawing a 'travel zone' of around 45 mins from central london by train and then work from that - we recently stayed overnight at Windsor, within view of the Castle and about 5 mins from the station. im sure a train into london from there would be around 1 hour max.

https://www.standard.co.uk/homesandproperty/property-news/45-minute-commutes-to-london-towns-villages-house-prices-a140605.html

that site might help you search, though it is primarily for house searches?

Hertford C&CC site is about 40mins to 50mins into London depending whether you go from Hertford East or Hertford North. They are on different lines with H.E. going into Liverpool Street and H.N. going to Moorgate or Kings Cross.
