I was considering spending a week or so here (possibly at Camping de l'Ile Cariot) during our next jaunt to France in late August - early September. However, we do not canoe, kayak or cycle due to having our 2 dogs with us, so would be restricted to relatively gentle walking / visiting the area by car.
I like the look of the area, but do those of you who know it think it would be worth us visiting, given that its main attraction seems to be the waterways and cycle paths?
Opinions welcome - thank you.

At the risk of appearing overly negative, I’ve never really understood the attraction of the place especially during the summer months. Warmth plus slow moving water only adds up to one thing in my experience and I can’t stand the little b***ers 😈
We were there in Late June last year and saw no mosquitos at all. Unfortunately we had to cut short our trip and so, like you, we are going back late August.
We have been a number of times, and like it, but we go because of the good cycle routes. Lots of signposted routes, which we enjoy. If it wasn't for that, we probably wouldn't bother going; the scenery is nice, with small pretty villages; Coulon is the main biggish town, which is quite touristy, but nice to have a mooch round.
We went last June for a week in total on 2 different sites, which I've done reviews on. I believe Niort is quite nice, but we've never visited.
A week would be more than enough IMHO; as I said, we go because there'slots of cycling and so that kept us there on 2 sites for a week. You can of course visit further by car, ie La Rochelle is not that far by car, and sites there would probably be busier (on the coast) than inland.

I always assumed it was a good area for fishing, bird watching, and finding rare wild flowers as welll as cycling - there must be many people interested in those things , but it never struck me as a holiday destination for me.
We were in the area for a week many years ago and enjoyed our stay. We had bikes with us and did a little cycling (probably one or two half days) and although I can’t remember what else we did, we certainly found enough to fill our week. The one thing I do remember is the mosquitoes so take plenty of repellant!

Nice site a short walk to village or turn right from site to reach woods and lovely paths. We were not bothered at all by mozzies. Maybe just lucky but we were there several times. Good luck.
