I need some advice please.
Most years we holiday on the Atlantic coast, but in 2017 we went to the Ardeche for the first time and I LOVED it!
Great scenery, loved the rowing etc...
Problem is no one else in my family did. The children who were 7 and 9 at the time found the Ardeche a bit scary in places when rowing, and my wife injured her back crashing her canoe!
We love the heat but when we were there it was really hot. 40 degrees in the day and mid 20 at night.
I am keen to go back, but thought the Tarn may suit us better. A slightly gentler river, but still good fun, and great scrnery. Am I right?
My wife has one stipulation and that is our caravan has aircon so she can sleep at night which I am finding hard to find.
Any advice de location and campsites would be appreciated. Thank you!

We've used the RCN Dutch group on several occasions and enjoyed them. The mobiles have always been of a good standard. They have a site Val de Cantobre which we have looked at but don't know the area at all or how well located it is. I'll be interested to see what advice you get☺️
Just a thought - if you want family friendly canoeing then the Dordogne might fit the bill.
Not as "rugged" as the Ardeche or Tarn but still a beautiful part of France. Tends not to be as hot as further east so air con not normally needed.
Plenty of sites on the banks of the river - eg Soliel Plage & La Bouysse at Vitrac, Perpetuum near Domme, Capeyrou at Beynac - all popular with members of this site - and being on the river usually means temps a degree or two cooler.
Loads of other sights to see / things to do in the area - gardens, castles, caves, pretty towns and villages etc.
As easily reached from Atlantic coast you could even do a split site holiday to give everybody something they want.
Try Les Peupliers at Riviere sur Tarn actually on the river Tarn - good standard mobile homes, nice family site. We've stayed there a lot over the years. River access at the bottom end of the site, variety of pitches - some very shady, some half-shade and some full sun. We also like St Lambert mentioned above - at both of those sites you may be lucky enough to see beaver in the river at dusk!
I really don't know about air-conditioning though - as we've never hired mobile homes, or felt we needed it even in high temperatures.............! I suppose the only way to find something is to email lots of sites in the Gorges du Tarn area. EDIT: Apparently some of the mobile homes at Les Peupliers do have air-conditioning (called 'climatisation' in France).
Val de Cantobre (mentioned above) was our favourite site for more than twenty years! It's not in the Gorge du Tarn itself, but alongside the Dourbie river. There is a wonderful drive over the Causse to Le Rozier, via LaRoque Ste Marguerite, up a very steep hillside.......... not for those without a head for heights!
We went to Val de Cantobre first in 1981 with a toddler, and immediately loved it. We've been back many many times since, with the children as they grew up and then as a couple or with friends. The last time was when Clare and Francois Dupond who owned the site sold it to RCN. We declared it the end of an era and haven't been back. That is the only reason I didn't recommend it - not that there is anything at all wrong with the site.
It is in a lovely setting - a bowl in the valley, where the light changes rapidly as the sun moves around and the shadows on the hills opposite are just magical. You can walk from the site into the lovely village of Nant where there is a small market, cafes and restaurants under the stone arches, a stream with a historic bridge......... just typing about it makes me want to go back!!!
Have a wonderful time anyone who goes to that area - maybe you will meet up with us revisiting old haunts.

As far as Val de Cantobre is concerned, the distance from supermarket shopping puts some people off - so make sure you get organised before you arrive with plenty of supplies.
On rainy days (yes there are some) you can even get down to the coast at Grau d'Agde in a couple of hours, and if it's raining in the hills it's almost always sunny at the beach (but check the weather forecast obviously).
Try some where like Camping les cascades at Cascades de Sautadet. Amazing location with calm water and more rapid types for those who want adrenaline. Lovely weather, great location and an affordable campsite. Or try somewhere near the Pont Du Gard where the water is absolutely perfect
We stayed in a mobile home at Camping Pont du Tarn at Florac. Its on the river and has access from inside the campsite, and is a short walk into town for supermarket etc. Its quite a simple site (or was a few years ago) but has a pool and a small bar. https://en.camping-florac.com/
We loved it there and wouldn't hesitate to return. One of our very favourite areas in France.

I am around the area at the moment and loads to do, and sites are very reasonable. Lots of pre erected tents going up. On the site I am on millau plage, they have new lodges and look good.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
