We did this for the our first time in September 2010. we also stayed at the lakes, then, again, like you went to luss, next we did Fort willaim/glennoe, from there we followed the road just north of loch ness but could not park anywhere. we then stopped at Pitlochry and then on to Edinburgh. and finally home. looking back i should have put a stop in somewhere at loch ness. we spent two weeks on that little trip and it was great. As someone else said watch out for mossie, we used avon 'skin so soft' and it has to be the woodland fresh scent.
Hi tony2020, If you stop at the Bunree Caravan site, as you come into Onich the site is a few hundred yards on your left, if you miss it don’t panic carry on for about a mile you will come to Corran ferry terminal on left (small terminal) you car turn there. The entrance to the Bunree site is over a cattle grid (cattle roam free), the road is single track with traffic lights controlling the entrance and exit of caravans.
If you wish to have a drink in a pub or a meal, there is one across the road from campsite entrance, at campsite entrance turn left walk over road bridge and turn first right walk up the hill road and it there in the Inchree chalet site( all welcome), Bunree is right on waters edge, and as Lobeydosser says allow extra time for your travelling , I always allow one hour extra on the route planer or sat/nav times, especially if journey is west coast and is over two hour drive. Take a camera and plenty of batteries, log your trip, you will love your tour of west coast.
------------- If everything runs smoothly then I must have done something wrong
If in Doubt Check it Out.
The following song by the McCalmans is about the A830 that heads for Malaig past Arisaig and should explain why some "A" roads in Scotland should be driven with care.
Lyrics - The 8-3-0
He was driving up to Mallaig, Glenfinnan by Lochshiel Heading for Lochailort content behind the wheel The road was getting narrower the sign said slow It’s the highland daily dodgems it’s the 8-3-0
There is a natural assumption that A-roads are wide Enough to take a car and one the other side Tourist information will never ever tell It’s like driving through heaven on a road made for hell
Chorus On a single track you can’t turn back the stories are all the same Of tourists leaving Corpach Never seen again Don’t go on the 8-3-0 Don’t go on th 8-3-0
Whoever called this road 'a road' is telling little lies The 8-3-0’s a sheep track, in very thin disguise Italian caravanettes, driving on the right Meeting Wallace Arnold Coaches in the middle of the night
On a single track you can’t turn back a nightmare without end It’s eyes ahead for David Coulthard’s waiting round the bend Don’t go on the 8-3-0 There’s a man in the highlands, the theory’s going round That he runs the biggest breaker’s yard this side of Mallaig town You can see him in the gloaming towing wrecks from where they lie And he turns them into girders for the bridge across to Skye
And it’s a single track he’s in Mallaig and now he feels no pain He’s dumped the car he’s in the bar he’s steaming back by train On a single track you can’s turn back the moral’s very plain If you want to visit Mallaig, it’s safer by MacBrayne’s Don’t go on the 8-3-0

However I am reliably informed that this road has been improved since this song was written.
I did a trip up that a few years ago. Started from Waford, over night stop just pass Birmingham, Kendal 2 nights, Edinburgh 3 nights, Nairn 5 nights, Luss 2 nights, Penrith 2 nights, Uttoxeter 2 nights and home. Over 1600 miles....
Fantastic time, Kendal c&cc site, hills change colour!, Edinburgh - ok, Nairn , good, loch ness , but try rosemarkie as right on water, with dolphins and seals swimming by.
Have my first trip to Bunree booked for Jubilee weekend along with a trip on the steam train, so looking forward to this.
On the east coast, if you fancy seeing Edinburgh there are two CC sites or if you want something quieter try Linwater. Only a 5 minute drive to a park and ride site with buses every 10 minutes during the day and £1.40 pp each way. It's also on the edge of a beautiful country park with lots of paths and walks. The owner is an absolute gem and nothing is too much trouble.
we live outside Glasgow and did the west coast route last year and stayed at many of the sites mentioned. The site at the foot of Ben Nevis I think is nicer than Bunree I would like to reiterate lobby dossers comments. The main road north from luss is very narrow in places and we nearly collided with an artic on a single lane part of the road and he clipped our side lights right off. We know the road quite well but were still caught out by others reckless driving. As an alternative, why don't you head up from the m80 towards stirling and through the trossachs, Doune, Callander, Strathyre. there are lot's of sites on route and then up to crianlaroch, glencoe and fort william. We found a great site at the foot of Ben Nevis, stayed a few nights, travelled up loch ness to inverness, upwards to gairloch and down to the kyles of lochalsh and then back to fort william and down south via the trossachs again. Some of the roads are single track but reasonably wide with lots of passing places. Don't forget the midge repellent and clothes for all seasons!
