We are just in the process of changing our car insurance and were surprised to find (after a lot of delving into the small print).that all the car insurance companies we got quotes from DO NOT cover damage to the caravan when towing except for third party claims. We then looked more closely at our caravan club car policy and find that they also do not cover the caravan when towing.
Also not sure of the procedure if someone runs into the rear of my caravan when towing as none of the insurance companies want to know, including caravan company insurers!
Car insurance covers third party damage ie the caravan hits a post and they pay for the post but not the damage to the caravan. The caravan insurance will cover the damage to the caravan. I speak from experience.
If someone runs into you whilst towing their insurance will pay as its their fault. (as they were too close).

Your caravan cover must cover the caravan when being towed. If not you have bought a very limited useless policy. Maybe read it again.
If you haven't, tell your car insurers you have a tow bar and are towing a caravan. The towbar is a modification and all modifications must be reported (even if the insurers don't sound interested!)

The original poster is referring to car insurance, not caravan insurance. Caravans are not covered under car insurance policies, so please be careful not to mislead him!
Under your car insurance, you will normally be covered for any third party damage your caravan may cause whilst being towed, eg if you hit another car with your caravan whilst towing it. The caravan is NOT covered for any damage to the caravan itself - this is taken care for under a separate policy for the caravan itself.
If someone hits your caravan whilst it is being towed, you will claim from their car insurance, or god forbid if they don't have insurance, you would claim under your caravan policy, then your caravan insurers would try and recover it from whoever hit you.
The important thing to note is, you should buy a separate policy for your caravan, unfortunately many do not.
The way I understand it is that a comprehensive car insurance covers the caravan third party only. i.e. if the caravan causes damage, the car insurance company will pay for damage caused by the caravan to a third part, but not for damage to the caravan itself. Damage to the caravan itself should be covered by your seperate caravan insurance. The system is the same whether either insurance is provided through the caravan club or elsewhere.
In each case it is wise to check the details of all policies.
Edit: Sorry, Webmaster. You just beat me too it - and your description is clearer too.

I did say that I was referring to CARAVAN insurance.
There have been previous posts where people have concluded that their caravan insurance does not cover them while towing, and hence think that the caravan is not insured at all while being towed.
Why do people expect their CAR insurance to cover their caravan just because the car is towing the caravan?
