Between Aurillac and Mauriac: D922. Halfway, turn to D42 through Besse. Follow the D42 up to the end (dead end road).
The volcanic area (the largest in Europe) with the Monts du Cantal dissolves into large plains where rivers flow. Around the mountainous area there are many picturesque villages, castles, country houses, fortifications and ruins. The Medieval fortress town of Salers is definitely worth a visit. The Cantal is a rural area where many farmers still raise cattle, the local brand being "Salers". The cows are a reddish brown and have beautiful horns and dominate the landscape. The Railway, built between 1882 and 1887, is no longer in use since 1994. But the overpasses are still present in the landscape. Possibiliy of draisines, and walking along the railroad.
