I made a booking with Fiona by e mail and she told me the areas in could pitch my tent.
I rode up from North Wales and arrived around 5pm and put my tent up.
There are 2 showers in the gents, which were always clean. They lave a laundry and fridge freezer and pot wash area. Also a TV room, small children's park.
The Carrion crows were busy nesting near by which was the only noise I heard.
A very peaceful quiet site which I will use again when in Dumfries and Galloway. via mobile
Arrived around 7pm on the Friday, initially couldn't find reception due to poor signage. Apparently it is inside what we initially thought was a dilapidated and unused house on the grounds. Tried the phone number on the door and got no reply.
On speaking to somebody on the park they pointed out the touring pitches and suggested we set up and check in come morning. Did just that, set up plugged in and no electric. Tried the next box and it was the same. Thinking there was an issue like a power cut we did without electric until morning. Went over to the office again at 9am and still no sign and no answer to the telephone.
Spoke to the gentleman who was up opening the pool and asked about checking in and the power situation. 'Oh half those points don't work' was his response. I'll get Fiona to come see you when she gets in.
About 10:20 the site manager came round and was frankly a bit rude when we pointed out it may be sensible to put signs on pitches that were faulty. We got the impression se was blaming us for pitching in the wrong place.
Anyway we now moved on to a pitch with electric which was overgrown and very sloped. One of the reasons we discounted it to begin with.
Had a cup of tea and headed down intending to use the advertised pool. Oh it's fully booked now, residents can only use it between 10am and 11am and it is £5 each. Something that had not been pointed out when booking.
The toilet blocks as previous reviewers have said are not great. There was a distinct smell of sewage and the cleanliness fell far short of what is expected on any campsite. It also suffers from low water pressure with showers barely more than a trickle.
That night we went to use the advertised on site BYOB bar. Stopped as we went in for the £10 charge for it. Hang on, that is something else you advertised which is only available at extra cost. We declined and decided to walk down into the village and the local pub which was very welcoming and good value.
There are some good points, the location is extremely easy to find direct off the A75. The view from some parts of the park are lovely. We met some lovely people walking round the site.
However the above points didn't make up for the poor service and excess charges for everything, and at £30 a night for very basic amenities we considered very poor value. There are far better sites for that money around the area.
We did speak to the manager on the Monday when leaving to voice our displeasure. That for £90 we had one night without electric and that none of the advertised facilities were included. She seemed disinterested bordering on rude.
We won't return and struggle to recommend in any way.
We stayed at Brandedleys camp site for a week in mid-September, which was quiet. It's difficult to write this review as we have mixed feelings about it. Both pros and cons.
Easy to get to, and despite being near the A75, we couldn't hear the traffic.
On arrival we were met with a lovely warm welcome and immediately felt at home and relaxed. Fiona is super friendly and very helpful. It's quite a large site, mostly statics etc.
There is a swimming pool, which was nice and warm, and the people's pub where you can relax, watch TV, help yourself to Tea & Coffee.
There is a village close by but everything we passed by the pub was closed.
Now the bit I don't like to write, but as we rely on honest feedback before booking anywhere, felt it is only right to share the negatives too. I asked before we arrived if there was a dog walking area where we could let our dog off lead. There is, but unfortunately, it was overgrown and full of weeds, so we couldn’t use it. But it is a decent walk around the site, but on the lead.
We couldn't find anywhere locally that was good for dog walking. We are from the lake district where you can generally walk around the lakes etc, and we wrongly assumed that there would be walks around the 2 Lochs close by, but we couldn't find anywhere to walk the dog other than on the site. There are lots of rabbits on the site so if your dog chases, think on.
You can go and find a vacant pitch, most of them are slightly sloped, but we had pitch 3, which was fine. Sadly, the whole site and amenities give you the impression they have had their hay day and look unloved/ dated.
The shower/toilet block (women's) had a bad smell, the toilets and shower areas were not clean and in need of a good scrubbing. So much so, it put me off using them. In 13 years of caravanning, it is the only site we have stayed, where I haven't used the showers because of the lack of cleanliness. The exterior of the building looks shabby, as do the water points.
The swimming pool was only available between 9-11 am, it has 2 small change rooms. Which are unisex/family rooms, with no lock on the doors, so getting changed made me feel very uncomfortable as anyone can walk in. Again, they look unloved, and for someone like me, who's terrified of spiders, cobwebs make me feel very on edge.
We couldn’t see any recycling bins, so disposed of everything in the general waste bins. There is so much that could be done to improve the appearance of the site without spending a fortune, a bit of bleach, a lick of paint, and tidy up the pitches (weeds and square off) would make all the difference.
Nothing to do with the site, but the junction as you turn off the A75 is in an horrendous condition, pot holes and poor surface, probably due the large amount of farm vehicles which use the road alongside the site.
Obviously, we did read the feedback before booking, and as you will see, there are lots of positives, but the pictures are somewhat deceiving. Our feedback is purely based on our opinions and experience.
We felt very disappointed with the site in general and thought it only fair to email them before leaving public feedback. They explained their normal cleaner was abroad and kindly offered us a free week, which we have politely declined. We just hope that the issues we raised are addressed for the benefit of other guests. via mobile
Very easy to access from the A75 - marginal road noise when pitched. We selected a pitch with EHU close to a water point.
The site was quite empty of people when we stayed but became busier at the weekend when people came to their permanent set ups. Excellent free WiFi from our pitch.
Facilities slightly dated but very clean. The site is well managed and well kept, we received a very friendly welcome. Super food at the pub in the village, five minutes easy walk.
A good site for easy access to all parts of Galloway and Dumfries and the Ayrshire coast. via mobile
