Only site in area, a mile from st marys lighthouse on foot along footpath along coast. Watch for tide times to cross to lighthouse and watch the seals. Quite a bit of wildlife along footpath, watch out for bikes on the main path, some of the off shoot paths are better for walking.
My 2 problems with this site, one was the closeness of pitches, both next to you and behind and in front, so many crammed in at all angles so everyone looked onto each other.
Two was the wardens, especially on arrival, we were treated like a nuisance and we arrived after 1pm, but I'm guessing several others hadn't. Were told to pitch up and sort everything out after, not a pleasant reception.
Pitches are sloping, some are ok, the ones at the very top seem best. If you go down the site you've got a hill to walk back up to reception, walk out the exit and facilities. Not that we were told where anything was! Handed a tiny slip of paper with a code on which turned out to be for toilet block but it wasn't explained. I found the info room by accident which has some leaflet, books n dvds. Its near the laundry room.
Bins also at the very top of site with recycling. People didn't even know where water was, some poor people struggled back up the hill with their aqua roll.
A lot of noise from aeroplanes landing at newcastle airport, both early and through night, woken at 2. 30 by one, then 2 more came over low. Chain Metal fence at bottom behind it people walked past on the footpath.
Toilet block closed 11 to 12 but exit was blocked at 10. 55 and I felt intimidated by them again. I think there's a fight for pitches at 1pm and the club should change to online selection to stop this.
Price was really high, mid week was £46. 70 and went up at weekends, really too much for this site. Will be handy for those who need a pub or bus stop close.
Wifi is via the club and I think you get 1hour free, we logged on but just to check walk to lighthouse. There is a small car park next door, smaller vans could park here for the day, a larger payable car park is further down at the lighthouse.
Glad I only booked a night, wouldn't go again, I doubt I'll be able to afford the site in a few years! via mobile
We booked this because of its proximity to Seaton Delaval Hall which we really enjoyed visiting with nearby family.
Site was fine, but £45 per night for midweek was a tad steep. Lots of units were using blocks for levelling but maybe we have an eye for a flat one as on pitch 49 we didn't need any.
Sea view was lovely but only about 5 pitches had a clear view, unblocked by other vans, Lord knows how the occupants had managed to bag them!
Facilities are modern and very clean.
It's next to the coastal path which in that area was quite flat for pleasant walks.
My mobility is not amazing so we drove to the car park near St Mary's Island and lighthouse and walked across the causeway at low tide. It was okay but even though we spent a long time watching the basking seals, we were only there an hour or so.
Good meal in the Delaval Arms only a few metres for the site entrance. 2 starters, 2 mains and drinks came to £84, we were happy with that.
Warden was friendly on arrival but never saw them again during our stay.
We had a nice stay but probably won't visit again as not much in the immediate area beyond the things we did on this trip.
The site overlooks the coast, so your unit will get rocked by the wind, but the view of the lighthouse, the coast and falling asleep to the sea was quite relaxing once the wind had died down.
Most pitches are sloping. You will need levelling ramps for motorhomes and most likely one for caravan side to side. There are loads of assorted blocks, bricks etc. Scattered round the site to help your steadies gain height. Bringing your own is a good idea.
Wardens are friendly and helpful. Site shop sell essentials, and there is a decent sized Co-op twenty minutes walk away.
There is a main toilet block near the entrance at the top of the site, recently rebuilt, in an excellent condition with ample hot water and an outside toilet waste point. Fresh water taps are adjacent to this, as are the waste water drains and the rubbish and recycling bins. Unless you enjoy dragging a full waste hog container up a long slope, I would suggest you empty it more often.
The electric hook up points appear to have individual meters, so expect the CMC to start charging for the amount of electricity used soon, otherwise, why fit them.
Site is a 45 minute walk from Whitley Bay, though there is a bus stop 5 minutes walk from the site entrance that will take you there or even all the way to Newcastle city centre or Blyth in the other direction for £2.50!
Only downside is the CAMC variable and escalating pricing system.
Very disappointed indeed. For £57 pn (CAMC members, Easter Saturday), I expected gold plated taps or at least a good night's sleep. At 5pm, having stopped at Seaton Delaval Hall (NT), the friendly warden allocated us "the last pitch" at no. 16, which was newly cut into the hillside, with loose gravel; the pitch was tiny, only just wide enough for our wheels and barely long enough for our 5. 8m. And very sloping, had to reverse up due to herringbone pattern pitch layout.
Despite using our chocks (I had read the reviews. ), we were sloping at almost 6 degrees; the plates slid off the table & the bottle of wine fell over - cap on, thankfully. I actually woke up falling out of bed and at 0300, I wanted to unplug and drive away.
I have never been so pleased to leave a site. Be advised - arrive at 13:01 to get your ideal pitch if you're in a MH; caravans were on the ground at the back and up on blocks at the front, but level.
Great sea views, smart new toilet block; it was whiffy in the evening and the mirrors were running with steam from the showers in the morning, the ventilation was feeble. Windows were locked. Dog walking off site, down to the beach in the morning. The little harbour at Seaton Sluice looked picturesque.
But £57 for that pitch, ouch. Not doing that again.
Smaller site, lovely - but for reasons that become obvious (it gets a touch windy) this is a no awning site.
It was particularly windy during our stay.
The pitches are not that level, so take ramps. The warden (a stand in I think) was brilliant, really friendly, nothing too much trouble. Again, some amazing views from the site.
We drove into Newcastle for a look around, all within easy reach.
We didn’t get to eat at the pub just outside the site as it was fully booked when we fancied it.
We stayed at this campsite for 3 nights while touring the North Country.
A good location, with views out to sea and St Mary's Lighthouse visible.
A good pub (small in bar area if you have a dog), but lovely food is right next to the campsite.
We walked to St Mary's Lighthouse once the tide had gone out and is a visitor's attraction which interesting. We walked to Whitley Bay from St Mary's Lighthouse which took approximately 40 minutes but a nice walk along the coastline. Bus stop is next to the pub and buses run regularly.
OK, to start with I grew up down the road in Whitley Bay so I know this area very well, and it is a most beautiful bit of the coast.
You get a great view from the site of St Mary's lighthouse, and view across Whitley Bay to the Spanish City. There are three pubs that do food, a chip shop and a Coop all within walking distance. Seaton Sluice is particularly worth a visit to see the harbour and the cut.
Seaton Hall isn't more than a 5 minute drive, and you also have Whitley Bay, Cullercoats and Tynemouth all easily accessible. There's a bus stop on the main road if you're in a motorhome and don't want to drive, and it's a main route so services are frequent.
Site facilities are fine, they are spotlessly clean, and about right for the size of the site. A notice said they will be upgraded, as they are starting to look a little old fashioned but that doesn't bother me.
The site feels a little compact. The Club has done the best it can to make sure everyone gets a decent view, but you get a small feeling of being like sardines in a can. Our pitch was just enough gravel to get the caravan on, then put the car alongside.
I don't think I saw any pitches with awnings but I could be wrong. I don't think this can be helped, unless they did a major remodelling and increased the size of the pitches to the standard caravan + awning + vehicle size.
There's no playground or area for kids to kick a ball around.
My main caveat is the price. It's an expensive site, and for a basic hard standing pitch with no awning, I think it is overpriced. We'd just come form a CL site in Scotland that was a fully serviced pitch with awning, for £24 a night. We chose this site as we were visiting for my mum's birthday, and preferred to be close to Whitley Bay. I doubt I'd book again unless prices drop a lot out of high season.
There is a public car park against the south edge of the site; I'd suggest you don't choose a pitch next to it as it gets the usual night time visits from cars who want to test their stereos. It needs locking up at night but that's an issue for the Club and local residents to take action on.
Superb popular location overlooking St Mary's Lighthouse close to Whitley Bay.
Excellent location for exploring NE coast north of Tynemouth.
Coop fairly close by together with some excellent pubs.
Thoroughly recommend the Delaval Arms - great food and some of the best microbrewery beers Ive tried in a long time
